"Utility for virtual desktops on your PC."

Winner Best software in 2014 - Desktops.

Overview

If you own a larger monitor and you still feel that the size of the display is not enough because of the limited default functionality Windows offers, then Dexpot is the right tool to help you take full advantage of your screen. In essence, the Dexpot software application will help you maximize the efficiency of your monitor by creating up to twenty virtual desktops. Moreover, even though Dexpot enables users to switch between the different displays easily and conveniently, each of them can be personalized independently from the rest.

Features such as wallpaper, icon dimensions, themes and many more can be adjusted to match the purposes it will be commonly used for. Consequentially, not only will you never grow bored with the same old Windows looks, but also each desktop display will be easily recognizable. To put it simple, Dexpot is the kind of software utility that can make you fall in love with your Windows operating system all over again.

Installation

Even though Dexpot was designed to adapt into any Windows environment, the characteristics of Windows 7 will enable users to take advantage of the entire plethora of functional aspects. In addition, the transparency features of Windows 7 will make Dexpot look even better. Dexpot is a freeware only during the thirty day trial and the disclaimer stipulates that it is not to be used for purposes other than private use. It does come bundled with a free utility named Driver Scanner, which is intended for locating outdated drivers, but installing the latter is completely discretionary. Due to its low size, the installation of Dexpot is almost instantaneous and the program can be accessed via the tray bar.

Interface

Whilst Dexpot does not come with a standard standalone application, each of the options that can be accessed via the tray bar menu will present its function in a pop-up menu. Via right clicking tray bar icon, users can switch between one of the four default virtual desktops. These are: full screen display, view the catalogue of programs currently running as 4 separate subpanels, modify the display mode for each desktop and choose which are programs to run by default, and many more. At the same time, changes made on the virtual desktops can be previewed in real time before actually applying them. It is worth noting that Dexpot works on the already familiar drag-and-drop system proprietary to Windows, so you should not experience difficulties when transferring a program to another virtual desktop.

Pros

The main gain associated with Dexpot comes from the fact that you can organize all your tasks into environments you design particularly for them. Moreover, each virtual desktop can be locked independently, so whilst the public tasks remain visible for everyone who sits at the computer, the private ones are kept away from prying eyes. On a side note, the independent security feature in conjunction with the ability to preset applications to load only on certain virtual environments, provides immense benefits for keeping your data safe.

Furthermore, Dexpot is highly customizable both as a whole and for independent windows. The ability to load up to twenty virtual windows is invaluable for those that operate on a powerful computer and several monitors simultaneously, as it eliminates the need to constantly switch terminals. Moreover, switching between view modes or windows is a breeze, thanks to the customizable hotkey system implemented by the developer. In addition, the resolution and the appearance are not the only characteristics that can be modified independently, but you can also change the sounds themes.

Cons

Obviously, accommodating several virtual environments will be putting some strain on your computer’s resources, as it is estimated the RAM memory usage increases by roughly ten percent, but it is not a major impediment for a robust system. At the same time, it would seem that if you are running the same application on two virtual desktops, closing it on one will do the same on the other.

Alternatives

Other software applications in the Dexpot category are CubeDesktop, Compiz (Linux), VirtuaWin and WindowsPager.

Conclusion

Even given the minor drawback of the extra memory usage, Dexpot is still an application that can completely change your perception on your old and boring Windows operating system by employing an innovative organizing system. Do give it a try Today!
