Top 6 Best Paid New Game Apps for iOS

Our previous review listed the best new free games for iOS but of course, it’s reasonable that there are paid games that deserve a spot on the list as well. Although it’s true that costumers are firstly drawn to freemium games, paid games are equally popular. For those of you who are willing to pay for a game app, this is the list with the best ones that were recently released.

1. Gunbrick by Nitrome, $2.99

Gunbrick is a game that soon after its release gained many fans and was turned into a sensation. In this game the player controls... the Gunbrick, obviously. It is a cube equipped with a gun on one side and a shield on the other. The player controls a delivery guy (who looks more like a duck with that nose), who has to deliver the Gunbrick to the recipient. In order to do that he must roll through puzzle-filled levels and pass through obstacles such as walls that you’ll have to break through, switches that you’ll have to push to move on, lasers, flames, weird creatures, police and others. As you can guess the gun is used to fire against enemies and the shield is to protect you from lasers and other lurking dangers. The controls are easy: you swipe to move the brick and tap to fire. You can also jump, but in order to achieve that you must make sure the gun is looking down.

Did I mention that it is a puzzle game? Yeah, the plot doesn’t sound like one but Gunbrick is a puzzle game, highly entertaining, weird in a good way, fast-paced, and full of explosions and battles. 2. Space Marshals by Pixelbite, $4.99

Do you remember the movie Cowboys and Aliens? It took place in the Wild West with aliens attacking and cowboys defending their town and people. Now, Space Marshals take the battle to space, hunting fugitives before they cause trouble. The layer is transported to the Wild West of space, where marshal Burton must take down fugitives that escaped after a prison break. It’s a tactical top-down shooter where weapons are everything. Body armors, grenades, shotguns, handguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, crossbows, energy weapons, throwing axes and more at your disposal. You can carry one two-handed and one single-handed weapon in each mission. But weapons are useless if you don’t know how to take cover and how to approach enemies without being seen. The story is intriguing and is divided in three chapters. Please keep in mind that what you pay for at first, is only chapter one. If you’re a fan of sci-fi, cowboys and shooter-games, Space Marshals will keep you good company.

3. Drop Wizard by Gionathan Pesaresi, $2.99

This one is my personal favorite on the list. Drop Wizard is an action arcade game where you play as Teo, a wizard on a quest to save his friend turned into stone by an evil warlock. The player must defeat enemies by shooting stars out of the hero’s wand, collect coins and items, unlock power-ups and find his way out of each platform in order to get to the final battles with bosses and clear levels. Each level is unique in its own way, and the enemies act in different ways depending on which level you’re on. The game offers over 60 levels for you to clear, which means that it will stay with you for quite some time. As a fan of pixel style games, Drop Wizard has impressed me with its art and during gameplay it felt like I was using a GameBoy back in my childhood. The 16-bit soundtrack certainly adds to the nostalgic feelings’ increase. Arcade games will always be popular and it’s great to see such good examples like Drop Wizard being developed and bringing back the magic of the ‘90’s gaming experience.

4. Battle Slimes by Dodreams Ltd., $1.99

Battle Slimes is a multiplayer game in which the player controls speedy & bouncy slime blobs and competes in matches against friends (up to four players can play at the same time) or the computer. You have four different slimes to choose from: Blue, Green, Red and Yellow; in addition, there are four levels plus power-ups which you can pick. To win you have to stomp or hit enemy slimes with colorful bubbles, while protecting your own slime from getting hit too. It’s an incredibly easy to play game, because all you have to do is tap to make your slime jump, and the rest happens automatically. You can also unlock power ups to increase your chances of winning. To begin playing, you must first pick one of the two game modes you are given and then one of the four different battle arenas. Still, it is way too simple and considering that all you have to do is jump at the right time, it might not appeal to those who are looking for a more complex gaming experience. Nonetheless, it’s a fun game to play against friends so if you’re up for friendly matches you should give it a try, but don’t hold many expectations for it. It’s a very simplified shooter game.

5. Sky Patrol by Beartrap Games Limited, $1.99

Sky Patrol is an arcade game with very simple controls; basically, it's only a matter of swiping and tapping (yes, in almost all games it's a matter of swiping and tapping), but in this game the player uses the controls in a very natural way. The goal is to protect planes from being taken down by the enemy fire. In order to do that you are equipped with various weapons such as rockets and bombs (the usual weapons found in fighting planes), while you can unlock extra ones like drones, barrels, etc., or even attacks. It’s very important though to target with precision however, because your weapons could easily end up in the wrong place. The game offers a vast amounts of fights and explosions- actually it's what you would expect in a dog fight simulator game for iOS. The graphics are quite lovely as well.

6. Spectrum by Bulkypix, $2.99

The final game on the list is Spectrum. Spectrum is a platform game set in an abstract world of stylized shapes and bright colors. The player is in control of a black, three-eyed creature which is trying to find the exit among various obstacles and elements. To do that the player can pick between two ways of playing; either by tilting their device or by using the classic method of tapping towards the directions they want the creature to move to. The obstacles are quite hard and luckily the controls are easy to use. The game offers 60 levels in 6 different environments. Also, in each level you are given three objectives to clear. Spectrum is a very complex and addicting game that will both captivate you and annoy you with its difficulty.
