When living in China, it looks like you need to carry your smart phone around as an alternative to full protection body armor. AppleDaily, the Chinese Apple-news web site recently reported that a man was shot with the over-sized Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 taking the brunt of the impact and the victim coming away mostly unscathed.

Nokia is the brand that has a bit of street cred as a phone maker that makes hard to break phones. Back in May an off-duty Brazilian Policeman was saved by his Nokia Lumia 520 which was in the right place at the right time.

This time, events unfolded rapidly in a restaurant when a man mistakenly dropped his wallet on the floor. A second man reached down, picked up the wallet and then allegedly cracked a joke about what he could use the contents of the wallet for.

The wallet owner took offense to this comment and pulled out a pistol. A tussle ensued with the second man pulling out a sickle (is everyone armed in China?) and moving towards the gunman. Ultimately the gun went off and hit the second man.

The bullet passed through part of his arm, before continuing on to his chest. The man's Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 was conveniently sitting in his shirt pocket and was in the right position to take the impact directly. The phone is dead to rights, but the man was later taken to hospital with what were considered to be non-life threatening injuries.

In an alternate universe, one could imagine the PR geeks at Samsung wanting to go with the ad line, “Buy Samsung. You might live longer.” or “Here's something the iPhone cannot do!”
