"free secure mini SFTP server using SSH"

Overview

Core FTP Mini SFTP Server is a limited miniature version of Core FTP Server that provides basic SFTP transfer functionality. This application facilitates the secure transfer of files from one computer to another via SSH/SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol).

Installation

This tiny utility downloads and installs very quickly, with minimal effort on behalf of the user. The software includes adequate help documentation so even if you've never installed an FTP server before you should be able to set up Core FTP Mini SFTP server with no problems. The file size is less than 1 MB, only 16 MB of RAM is required, and it is compatible with all known versions of Windows.

Interface

The user interface is very plain and straightforward, with a login window that contains four input fields – User, Password, Port, and Root Path. Simply type the necessary credentials into these fields and a connection with the server will be established. After you're connected you can begin transferring files, and the transfer statuses of each operation will be conveniently listed within the connections dialog, which displays the address/IP that a file is being transferred to/from along with the connection status.

Pros

  • Provides basic functionality that facilitates SFTP transfers without all of the advanced features seen in a more powerful FTP server solution. For this reason, the software is ideal for novice users that only need a secure way to transfer files from one computer to another

  • Offers a secure alternative to e-mail and other methods of file sharing online, as a direct connection is established between two computers, rather than information being sent into cyberspace where it can be intercepted, decrypted, and used for nefarious purposes

  • Interface will be familiar to anyone who has used an FTP server before

  • Uses almost no computer resources to operate and can be installed on older versions of Windows, so it can be used on even the most outdated machines

Cons

  • Can only be used to send files from one computer to another

  • You can't save login credentials, so you have to repeatedly enter them in each time you launch software

Alternatives

Although there aren't many notable miniature SFTP server applications available for download, there is a plethora of other larger FTP server solutions that provide more comprehensive functionality for advanced users. Besides the full featured Core FTP Server, the most notable FTP servers are FileZilla Server, Serv-U, and BulletProof FTP Server. Of these competitors, FileZilla Server is by far the most popular, providing an all-inclusive solution that has become recognized as the industry standard by many webmasters.

Conclusion

If you're looking for an easy and secure way to transfer files from one computer to another without taking the risk of having an e-mail intercepted, Core FTP Mini SFTP server is definitely a viable option. However, if you're looking for a more robust FTP Server solution, consider trying the full version of Core FTP Server or one of the aforementioned alternatives.
