"SSH server: file transfer, tunneling, console"

WinSSHD aka Bitvise SSH Server is a SSH package to create a server environment on a Windows PC that can be accessed across a network or the internet.

The software supports both domain accounts and Windows groups for sophisticated access across corporate networks. SFTP and SCP file transfers can be allowed for more secure uploading and downloading of data when performing FTP file transfers. TCP/IP tunneling is also supported for remote desktop access. Console access is supported too via VT100, bvterm and xterm access.

SSH port forwarding can be used, so software VPNs will operate well. Kerberos authentication can be included, with COM configuration options and scripting with Kerberos all possible.

There is a presentation control panel which confirms that the SSH server is running with technical information relating to it and it provides further options.

The installation is more complicated than the standard type of application. The initial setup dialog includes whether to setup a new default Bitvise SSH server or a names Bitvise SSH server. The location is setup and the user also chooses whether to go direct to the Bitvise SSH Server Control Panel when done.

Then there is the option whether to choose the Standard edition which is fully functional for 30 days or the Personal edition which does not expire and is free for personal use. The Personal edition has a number of specific functionality restrictions which need to be considered carefully.

The installer advised the user that several of the main functions will not be available until the PC has been restarted, however the software can run without a reboot once installed.

There was no adware, spyware, malware or other questionable addition to the distribution package.

WinSSHD requires Windows NT4, 2000, XP or 2003.

The Bitvise SSH Server Easy Settings dialog window pops open first. This is a three tabbed affair which lets the user first run a test connection to the local host, then moves on to Windows accounts and then virtual accounts.

The Bitvise SSH Server Control Panel then displays. This provides a detailed breakdown of all the details of the SSH Server once it has been enabled.

The host keys for DSA, RSA, Bubble-Babble and MD5 fingerprint are all shown.

The running status of the SSH server is confirmed and the user has the option to disconnect it when they choose.
