FTP management has never been so easy than with the aid of Transmit, an utility developed by Panic Inc., that allows users to almost completely control of the process. Not only that, but Transmit is capable of carrying out a few other operations as well, from data backup to disk burning, and more. The interface of this utility has been fully revamped in the current version and now integrates a lot of animations and a superior organization system that makes the work not only simple, but also entertaining. At the same time, Transmit facilitates the workflow by allowing users to arrange them in the “places” section.

Transmit has been constructed and optimized for the Mac operating system, but also works for PPC and 10.6 Intel counterparts. The Transmit kit occupies approximately 23MB and comes as a trial version, valid for thirty days with the full array of features. There is no basic installation required, as opening the archive automatically transports users to the pop-up screen where you either buy the full version or continue evaluating it.

As mentioned, the interface of Transmit has seen quite a few improvements, although the simplicity has not reached the point where it can address novice users. Basic FTP operating skills are still required in order to take advantage of all the features. However, it is noticeably cleaner and the tools, such as the FTP, burner, backup and others, can be access via the bar in the upper section of the main window. Predictably enough, the FTP sub-window is split into two sections: Archive and FTP. In the lower side, users can notice the file transfer progress bar and the log.

For one thing, Transmit in its current version shows amazing speeds, particularly when the files being transferred are small and in large quantities. At the same time, the integrated synching feature can be regarded as innovative, particularly because it enables simulation of the operation before proceeding with it. Furthermore, Transmit comes with a disk that gives the functionality of mounting FTP servers on a computer’s desktop. It has also been stated that very few FTP clients can offer the same data transfer speed while maintaining stability, the way Transmit does. The permissions can be adjusted automatically in order to save time and clients can manage several connections simultaneously between the tabs. In addition, whenever the loss of connection causes the transfer to stop, Transmit allows you to resume it from the very same point.

Transmit is a bit on the pricey side, but it is definitely worth buying after the trial period of 30 days has expired.

The list of similar software includes: Cyberduck (Windows, Mac), FileZilla (Client, Server), Fetch and Classic FTP for Mac. A different solution would be Vault File Upload and Download Applet, if you need a HTTP alternative for your website.

A polished, well-equipped FTP client, Transmit 4.1.7 was one of the most anticipated releases and MAC fans were not disappointed. It looks like the developer basically covered all the important aspects of a FTP client brilliantly without forgetting to add a personal touch. To put it simply, Transmit is on top of its game!
