At the Computex Taipei 2016 event, ARM announced the development of new CPU and GPU models, which we will see in high-end smartphones in 2017.

According to ARM, the Cortex-A73 CPU and Mali-G71 graphics chip will be quite parsimonious in terms of energy consumption, while their performance abilities will allow them to display even VR content.

ARM Cortex-A73 CPU and Mali-G71 graphics chip

Starting from the Mali-G71, it is worth noting that it is the first graphics chip to be manufactured with Bifrost architecture, which will increase performance by 50% while consuming 20% less energy. According to ARM, the fact that it will incorporate 32 shader cores, will bring it closer to the performance that of GTX 940M.

Regarding the Cortex-A73 processor, even though the gain in performance is not very big compared to previous processor generations, it will be 30% less energy-intensive compared to the A72, and 30% more powerful.

ARM is expected to put these chips in production towards the end of 2016, so we can be sure we will probably see them in portable devices in 2017. Keep in mind however, that ARM provides separate licenses for chips and separate licenses for the architecture, so it is not unlikely that the former is used without the latter, just like in Apple’s case, which uses the ARM’s architecture but equips it with chips manufactured by Apple itself. The opposite can be seen in the case of Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.

The only certain thing is that, unlike other architectures, there is much more progress.
