"Spell checking utility"

Overview

Spelr is an independent spelling checker that includes many dictionaries in quite a few languages to ensure that most writers can avoid making spelling mistakes in their native tongue.

The software is application agnostic. This means that it can check the spelling of a WordPress post before it gets published, a comment on a message board before it is added on, or a few random thoughts jotted down in Notepad. Either way, the software can be activated using a hot key or via the system tray tool and it'll open up and begin spell checking the item that has the focus.

The software does come with its own set of dictionaries, but it is also compatible with the Mozilla dictionaries, plus the user can add their own words to a personal dictionary too. When it comes to spelling, it is fair to say that the Spelr software has everyone covered.

The contents of the Windows clipboard can be checked for spelling mistakes. Selected text or a complete document can be searched and corrected for any errors in the selected language.

The hot keys that activate the various spell checking options are also user-configurable if the hot key defaults conflict with another application or are not to the user's liking.

Installation

The installation required 3.5 MB of available disk space. The setup completed normally without any issues.

No adware, spyware, toolbars or other unnecessary software was included with the setup package.

Spelr requires Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 10 (32/64 bit).

Interface

Spelr sits quietly in the system tray waiting to be activated. This can be done using one of three different hot keys or by accessing the system tray tool and right-clicking it to bring up the appropriate context menu.

The Shift + F3 hot key combination will start to spell check the current document. There are also options to spell check a selection or the clipboard contents before they get pasted somewhere else.

Pros

  • Spell check any document or text entry field whether it is in a Word document or an Internet Explorer entry box
  • Multi-language support
  • Spell check clipboard contents to avoid pasting incorrect spelling
  • Auto-correct misspelled words
  • Add own words to a personal dictionary
  • Access a thesaurus, online dictionary and other sources online
  • Configure hot keys to activate spell checking
  • Startup option to load when Windows does
  • System tray program

Cons

None.

Alternatives

IESpell is one alternative that offers a UK, US and Canadian spelling dictionaries and can spell check in a web browser.

Conclusion

Spelr is a good option for people who like to spell check every piece of content, comments and posts that they wish to place online or distribute.
