"A fast,stable tri-core browser."

Considering big names like Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox dominate the browser market, the very fact that Avant has somehow managed to carve out a niche for itself is impressive to say the least. It has done so by offering its users an ultra-fast browsing experience that is user-friendly in the same breath.

Just like the browser itself, installing Avant is no hassle and shouldn't take more than a minute or so. It supports Windows XP, 2003, Vista and 7, but also requires that Internet Explorer version 6.0, 7.0 or 8.0 is installed.

At first glance, the Avant interface resembles any other browser - complete with tabs and the usual collection of navigation icons such as 'back', 'forward', 'stop', 'refresh', and so on as well as the customary URL bar.

However closer inspection will reveal a rather odd right-oriented menu bar, along with a few other additional icons near the minimize button. This departure from the norm may take a bit of getting used to.

The latest version of Avant manages to differentiate itself from the more commonly used browsers by offering the user a choice of three different browser engines: Trident (Internet Explorer), Gecko (Firefox) or Webkit (Chrome).

As a result, if a website layout doesn't display properly on a particular type of browser engine, the user can simply switch over to another that it may be more optimized for.

Apart from that, Avant also has other features that appeal to many, such as:

  • A video sniffer that will detect videos present on websites and let the user download them with a single click
  • Startup login so that Avant logs into all websites that a user frequents as soon as the browser is launched
  • Mouse gestures that let users 'draw' actions on the screen with their pointer

Needless to say, along with all of these additional features Avant also can hold its own against other browsers in terms of its resource consumption, multi-processing, and private browsing.

The one area that Avant disappoints slightly is in its user interface that really does come off as being counter-intuitive due to the strange orientation of the menu bar. However if you're able to look past that initially, you'll soon find that you grow accustomed to it.

To be honest, Avant's competitors don't really need much introduction and they include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera. Granted there are other browsers out there two, but these 5 remain the most widely used.

Avant may lag behind these alternatives in terms of popularity, but its features are more extensive and it is capable of things that most other browsers can only do with the help of third-party plugins and addons.

While it is true that Avant probably isn't going to win the browser-wars anytime soon, in its current version it is a nice, resource-friendly and fast browser that is user-friendly enough.

Coupled with its additional features, it makes a decent alternative to the more popular browsers out there - especially since now it is practically as if you're using three browsers in one.
