"Complete recording studio app for the Mac."

Overview

If you were to search for recording software utilities over the internet, you would notice the wide variety of intricate applications that are not compatible with your Mac. However, if you want to turn your Mac into a veritable recording studio you should look no further than the Apple GarageBand application. Whilst it has a wide array of features, this application is not commonly designed for professional recordings. Nonetheless, it incorporates all the options an amateur recorder would need in order to create a podcast or a rough demo.

Even though it has embedded a wide variety of professional editing options, such as amps or several pedal types, one of its most impressive features is the tool that teaches you how to play an instrument. In addition, it includes a feedback option, where you and your band can see how accurately you played a certain instrument and overview your progress over a certain period of time.

Installation

In order to get the GarageBand application installed on your computer, you will need to designate at least 2 GB of your hard drive. If you are interested in installing the full iLife suite, which includes other applications besides GarageBand, then make sure that you have at least 4.3 GB free on the drive. Other than ensuring you have sufficient space for it, the installation process is extremely simple and intuitive. It is important to note that before installation, you will have the possibility to choose the items you want from the program via the custom install section.

Moreover, as Apple recommends, do not forget to update the software after installation and every time you launch it. In its basic format, the application has approximately one thousand pre-recorded loops. By updating it constantly, you might gain access to other loops from the Jam Packs expansion packs.

Interface

Apple is one of the best interface builders across the globe and the GarageBand is no exception to this rule. When you first launch the application, you will be redirected from the welcome screen to choose the task you want perform. The five main commands that you can access are New Project, Learn to Play, iPhone ringtone, Magic GarageBand virtual combo, and instant access to the Apple store.

By clicking on the New Project menu, you will gain access to other recording submenus, such as electric guitar, piano, voice, acoustic instrument, and so on. After you access the submenu of your choosing, you will be redirected to the recording and editing screen. In the editing screen, the main options are in the left part of the screen while the tracks’ lines are running in the center. By double clicking on a track, you will have instant access to further editing options.

Pros

One benefit of the GarageBand is that you only pay around $14.99 and have access to quite a handful of editing and recording features. It has an amazing and intuitive interface, great instrument tutorials for both basic and advanced users, allows multi-track recordings and has a feedback feature that records your performance and progress rate. What more can you ask for?

Cons

There have been several problems with the GarageBand since its first release. However, you will be happy to know that Apple constantly verifies the user complaints and releases regular patches to correct them. While you can fix most of the errors in the application by updating it or applying the official patch, most users are still unhappy that several important features of the recording tool involve large downloads.

Alternatives

The most popular alternative to GarageBand for Windows users is Acoustica’s Mixcraft tool. Even though you can basically do the same tasks with these applications, Mixcraft has the advantage that it provides over three thousand free sounds unlike GarageBand that only offers one thousand. However, as stated, this version is not available for Mac users.

Conclusion

Overall, GarageBand from Apple looks like an impressive music creation software. Its price is justifiable, considering how many editing options and recording possibilities it provides. Sure, it cannot match a professional studio. However, it includes more than any average musician will actually need or use. Whether you are considering trying your luck in the music production industry or you want to learn more about how to play the guitar or the piano, there is no better application for your Mac.
