Quick Review

"Softphone for VoIP"

PhonerLite is a free and straightforward Windows application that allows users to make Internet telephony calls using the SIP protocol. It requires a full-duplex sound card, a microphone and speakers, and an Internet connection. The software supports several SIP profiles, each of which can be configured independently, and it also supports advanced encryption methods such as TLS, SRTP, and ZRTP.

PhonerLite shares common code with another application called Phoner and uses the file "sipper.dll". The two applications have the same VoIP-specific configurations, and if they are installed in the same directory, they use the same DLL and configuration data. However, PhonerLite has a different GUI than Phoner, which makes it easier to use.

The main window of PhonerLite is divided into three parts. On the left side, users can initiate and manipulate calls. In the center, a list of active calls is displayed. On the right side, users can adjust the volume and sound device settings. If there are multiple sound devices present in the system, users can choose the appropriate one by right-clicking on the microphone or speaker button and selecting the desired device from the context menu.

The appearance of PhonerLite can be changed at any time by right-clicking on the upper button bar and selecting an option from the context menu. The software also supports HID compatible headsets by Jabra and Sennheiser, allowing users to accept and disconnect incoming calls by pressing the button on the headset.

PhonerLite displays a list of active calls, and the status of the connection is indicated by a symbol in front of each entry in the list. Red arrows indicate outgoing calls, while green arrows indicate incoming calls. The software provides buttons for call handling, including call initiation, disconnection, redial, forwarding, and hold. If there are multiple connections, these actions are related to the selected call in the call list.

PhonerLite also supports call transfer, which can be initiated by dragging and dropping the active call onto the held call. Users can also perform a "blind transfer" by dragging and dropping the new number onto the "Destination number" field.

If users want to send DTMFs after call establishment, they can do so by appending a semicolon and the DTMFs at the end of the phone number. Multiple semicolons can be used for longer pauses, while commas are used for shorter pauses. For example, 0123456789;1234 would send the DTMFs 1234 after the call is established, and 012345679;;1,2,3,4 would send a one-second pause followed by the DTMFs 1, 2, 3, and 4.
