"Get information about IP address."

Overview

Even professionals use simple tools some times, and with this in mind we will review a program that is quite useful to all kinds of users, IPNetInfo. This nifty little software will gather and display many details regarding any IP address you enter, including geographical location, IP addresses range, contact information and can also be used to track the source of incoming mails.

Installation

You can either grab a portable version of the program, which comes in compressed form as a ZIP archive, or you can download the self-install executable for a normal installation. To use the portable version just unzip the archive and run the executable in it, whilst to install the program just run the setup file and follow a small number of steps to complete the procedure. None of those packages include malware.

Supported operating systems are Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and 7.

Interface

When you launch the program two windows will open. In the first one you’ll be asked to enter the IP(s) you want to analyze, check a few options and then click OK. The IPs will be displayed in the other window along with the corresponding details split into columns (country, network name, owner name, etc.). In the lower part of the window you can see a lot more information regarding the selected IP address.

Pros

To obtain IP information program sends a request to the whois servers of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which are ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC and AfriNIC. So basically IPNetInfo leeches this information and displays it on the screen.

Now what you actually get to see is the country/state of the IP address, network name, owner name, IP addresses range, contact name, address, phone, fax… and the list goes on. The lower pane of the window displays the full WHOIS record.

When analyzing an IP address, checking the “Resolve IP address” will display the resolved host name of the IP address under the “Resolved Name” column.

The reverse operation is possible as well, meaning that you can enter a host name and the program will convert it to an IP address. Very useful when trying to find the IP address of a website.

Cons

No cons. It works without problems and the user is presented with tons of information.

Alternatives

Not many worth noting alternatives exist for IPNetInfo, but one of them is an online tool called IPWHOIS Lookup. It’s not configurable at all and displays less details than IPNetInfo. It’s a good thing though that you can find an IP address using a host name.

Conclusion

If you want to track an IP address from an email, or want to find out information regarding a range of IP addresses without having to look at several different websites and use various tools, then IPNetInfo is what you really need. It’s not the kind of program that will leave you confused or unsatisfied, but rather the program that will do anything in its power to provide you with numerous accurate details about your query.
