"A very useful network tracking utility."

Overview

Nmap aka ZenMap is an open-source network utility that can be used to discover different networks and for auditing networks for security purposes.

The software examines raw IP data packets in order to discover which hosts are currently available, the services such as app name and app version, the type of operating system used by the host, firewall protection, and more much.

Nmap is configured to scan huge networks quickly, but it can also be used to scan single networks. Thousands of network devices can be scanned through the package. The software includes a debugging tool, a utility to compare previous scan results with current ones, and a ping tool to create new data packets.

Both UDP and TCP ports can be scanned. Networks can be accurately mapped complete with their firewalls, routers, IP filters and other parts to create an accurate idea of the size and scope of it.

The package can run on many operating systems like Windows, OS X, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Amiga and others.

The software is well known amount network administrators. Indeed, this package has a bit of a cult following having been featured in movies such as Matrix Reloaded, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Die Hard 4, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Both a GUI and a command line are supported.

Installation

The software is portable and therefore doesn't need to be installed.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included with the setup package.

Zenmap requires Windows OS. It is also cross-compatible with Mac, Linux, Amiga and other systems too.

Interface

There is both a GUI and a command line option for using Zenmap.

The GUI has a short menu system with top-level menu options for Scan, Tools, Profile, and Help. The toolbar below it is pretty limited.

The target, scanning profile and command can be entered in the three fields below the toolbar.

There is a dual pane display below this point. The left pane displays host or services information. To the right is more specific communication protocol information with a tabbed navigation with options for Ports / Hosts, Nmap Output, Host Details, and Scan Details.

Pros

  • In-depth network scanning capabilities
  • Scan huge networks with thousands of network devices
  • Scan both UDP and TCP ports
  • Build up a detailed view of a complete network even if it has thousands of devices within it
  • Check for security vulnerabilities and incorrectly configured routers, switches and modems
  • GUI and command line interfaces
  • Clean GUI look

Cons

  • Complex for the average user

Alternatives

The Wireless Network Watcher can keep an eye on local wireless networks. Other similar software are Angry IP Scanner and SoftPerfect Network Scanner.

Conclusion

Zenmap is a complete network scanning tool which offer robust scanning of thousands of network devices from a single open-source package.
