"A simple hard disk and folder analyser."

Overview

Xinorbis is a comprehensive hard disk analysis software that uses a variety of views to display system performance information. This program makes it easy to view all of the properties of any installed or attached hard drives, directories, and even external storage devices.

Installation

At a file size of 7 MB, this application is a bit large for an analytical program, yet compensates for the extra disk space consumption by offering one of the most all-inclusive performance monitoring and reporting solutions available. Completing the setup is as simple as clicking your mouse a few times and following the on-screen dialogue provided within the wizard-style setup guide. The software is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit).

Interface

The Xinorbis user interface is very customizable and easy-to-use, providing unified access to all the software's features in neatly categorized menus, tabs, and button icons located along the top left of the main window. In the left navigation pane you'll find five modules – Welcome, Tasks, Advanced, Reports, and Help. The Welcome screen lets you quickly scan a drive/folder, import scan details from previous scans, and view folder history. The tasks module provides a summary of the directory/disk scan, as well as folder properties/structure, and an integrated search function.

Pros

  • Displays a complete overview of a hard disk's contents, letting you view information in customizable tree displays, tables, and graphs. You can easily switch between views with a click of the mouse

  • Simplifies the process of viewing the file distribution/composition, structure, and contents of an entire hard drive, a network drive that has been mapped, or a specified folder

  • Lets you generate and print comprehensive reports. You can create several reports for different hard disks and folders, or you can merge them all into a centralized data sheet. You can export these reports in a variety of formats, including HTML, CSV, ASCII, and XML

  • Save generated reports/tables to be referred to for comparison later on, or copy/paste them into other existing documents

  • Sorts scan results by attributes, file type, user, size, and date

  • Locate and delete duplicate files, and sort results by name/size

  • Integrated shell supports means you can right-click a directory and scan it for analysis by Xinornis within the context menu

  • Aids in the process of improving hard drive optimization by providing invaluable insight to the various aspects of your hard disk

Cons

  • Scan times are a bit lengthy and the large number of tabs make the interface appear cluttered in some modules.

Alternatives

There are a variety of other programs to choose from with functionality similar to Xinorbis, including Tree Size, SpaceSniffer, WinDirStat, and GrandPerspective for Mac.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a way to analyze your hard disk's structure, properties, and contents, there are few programs that can outperform Xinorbis. With powerful data display capabilities, report generating options, adequate help documentation, and plenty of other advanced features, this software is one of the most appreciated free hard disk analysis applications available.
