Magic File Renamer Professional Edition 7.4.0

Magic File Renamer Professional Edition 7.4.0

Reviewed by Gary Oldwood

"A powerful file renamer and ID3 tagger"

Overview

Magic File Renamer is not an ordinary file renaming tool. It has several features such as batch renaming, audio file tagging, online music album information retrieval, image info and metadata reading support, editing of text files and others. It also gives you the ability to preview any changes before they are made, as well as keep a log of all the performed actions.

Installation

The installation process is pretty much straightforward and quick. There are no steps that require you to configure any settings, or ask you to install any additional software. The program is also free of spyware and malware.

As a requirement for this software to work properly, Microsoft .NET Framework 4 is needed.

Magic File Renamer works under Windows 2003, 2008, XP, Vista, 7 and 8 (32 and 64-bit editions supported).

Interface

The interface looks stylish and innovative, with modern buttons and organized panels. The main window is divided in various boxes and each one has its own purpose. On the top left side is the File Explorer area, which is used for browsing your computer’s files and folders. On its right side there are three other boxes, all regarding filters. The one at the top left has a list with the available filters, the box next to it has a list with the applied filters and at the bottom is the Filter Configuration Panel. At the bottom of the window is the Rename List, which shows information about the files selected for renaming.

Pros

You can edit names, extensions, attributes and dates for files and folders. You can also edit tags for the following audio file formats: MP3, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, APE, ASF, DIVX, AVI, WAV and RMI. Before applying any changes that you want to make, you can preview them in the Rename List panel. Support for retrieving album and song information through freedb.org online music database is implemented, thus renaming track names and tags is a lot easier.

For images in particular, the program can read their properties and metadata, and then use the obtained information in their filename. The supported file formats are: JPEG, TIFF, JPEG 2000, PNG, GIF and PDF. On top of that, using geonames.org database, the program can automatically find the nearby country, region or city from the location info in images. This way you can add location names to your pictures’ filenames and sort them by location.

Using the context menu you can add files and folders in the application easily.

Cons

You must spend some time to get familiar with the software, because at first it will probably seem a bit difficult. But after a while you’ll see that it’s not that hard to use.

Alternatives

Depending on what you want to do, there are different renaming tools. For example, if you want to rename a large number of files, Bulk Rename Utility (free) is the right one for you, and if you want to edit the tags of your audio files, then EasyTAG (free) is the best choice. But Magic File Renamer combines everything you need for any renaming task.

Conclusion

Magic File Renamer is a fully featured, flexible and fast program with extended functionality, thanks to all the containing filters. This is for anyone who wants a small but powerful renaming tool that will not disappoint you in any situation.
