"Wi‑Fi optimization"

Overview

InSSIDer is a Wi-Fi mapping, optimizing and configuration tool for Windows users.

The software is primarily aimed at office users who need to deploy or maintain a Wi-Fi network that all worker in the office can access successfully with sufficient signal strength to remain connected at all times and achieve faster data transfers speeds in the process.

The tool can be used to discover what networks are available around the office. RF signals can also be detected. Wi-Fi networks can be scanned across both the cluttered 2.4 Ghz band and the more available 5 Ghz band that Wi-Fi can be broadcast on. View the unique SSIDs that are being used by each Wi-Fi network. Different channels can be used for Wi-Fi setup in order to avoid conflicts with other existing networks in the general vicinity. Access Points can be properly configured with the help of this tool by working around known interference.

View clearly how data packets are being send and received. Visualize what is happening on the existing Wi-Fi network. See which users are using the majority of the bandwidth. Determine which users are suffering with slower network speeds than others and those that are in a dead zone with no connection speed at all.

Installation

The installation completed without any issues.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included with the setup package.

InSSIDer requires Windows OS.

Interface

The interface is black with other colors standing out. This can make it a little difficult to make out at times.

There is a minimal menu system and then some large section navigation at the top which is more useful.

The Wi-Fi networks that have been scanned are shown in the main pane with their SSID, signal strength, channel number, security configuration, MAC address, Wi-Fi type, and many other settings shown for each network.

Both 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz graphs show the current signal strength and penetration which can be used as a guide to determine which network are the most powerful.

Pros

  • Test the signal strength of each corporate Wi-Fi network
  • Determine dead zones
  • See network graphs showing signal strength
  • View all Wi-Fi networks found in the area
  • Change Wi-Fi channels to isolate interfere problems

Cons

  • Advanced tool not for home users who do not know what they are doing with it

Alternatives

NetSpot is a wireless local area network survey package for the Mac.

Conclusion

InSSIDer is a very useful tool for system administrators who need to diagnose connectivity problems in isolated parts of a Wi-Fi network in the office.
