"Change TCP/IP settings easily and quickly"

Overview

IP Shifter is a network utility to enable the user to configure their TCP/IP network settings within Windows in a more flexible and easier way.

Many users work from several regional offices, or switch between a head office and a home office for evening and weekend extra work time. Switching between properly configured network profiles is not an easy thing especially if the network profile is configured with customizations like custom IP settings or a proxy server.

The software is capable of dealing with multiple network adapters, so a user can use an internal wireless card, a USB-connected wireless dongle or a local area network quite easily.

Configuring different connections with their own IP address, DNS, proxy, gateway and subnet mask information is possible and then these settings are saved for easy access later. This reduces a lot of the hassle when switching between networks and systems.

Installation

The installation requires 5.6 MB of available space. The software installed without difficulties.

There was no adware, toolbars, malware or spyware included with the setup package.

IP Shifter requires Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server or 7.

Interface

The interface has a series of menus at the top of the main window providing access to all the features. Below the menu is a mini toolbar with medium-sized icons offering faster access to key features of the software. There is hover text that appears for each toolbar button when hovering a mouse over it which takes the mystery out of their use.

The main area has columns for Profile name, Adapter interface, IP address, Subnet mask, and Default masks.

At the bottom of the display is a Current Status which provides access to both wireless networks and local area networks that the PC has access to. When selecting one of these networks, often additional IP connection details are shown to the right side; IP address and Subnet mask.

Pros

  • Access wireless network adapters, local area networks and virtual machine connections
  • Configure IP address, DNS, proxy, gateway and subnet mask information for each network
  • Save time when switching between LAN networks or wireless options

Cons

None.

Alternatives

The TCP/IP Manager also lets the user switch between network profiles.

Conclusion

IP Shifter is a handy package for anyone who either heavily configures their internet access through proxies or other custom settings, or who uses more than one local area network in the course of a typical week. The software can save the information to avoid repeatedly having to configure network configuration options each time.
