"A game about breaking and placing blocks."

After years of alpha and beta versions of Minecraft its developers at Mojang have finally given fans a stable release. It didn’t take Minecraft long to become the most successful and popular survival sandbox game out currently. With millions of players immersed in what looks like an 8-bit era game, there’s no doubt that those who enjoy letting their creativity run wild will enjoy this game.

Minecraft is a game that really derives on how the player wants to play. With two modes to play with Survival and Creator mode you feel as the chains fall right off as you log into the Minecraft world. Whether you want to spend hours collecting materials to craft new items with, dig deep into the unknown far beneath the worlds surface or just spend time making countless creations of literally anything you can image. Minecraft is really a game of your imagination and your experience relies on just that. If marking your own adventures or building off the imagination isn’t your thing, then Minecraft may not be your cup of tea.

The demo only offers an hour and half of gameplay which can easily leave you desiring for more time to finish building your new found home or investigating an under-earth environment. Even within that short of time I felt like I had embarked on an adventure that I can truly call my own. Fending off unknown creatures in the night while I tried to protect my new found home, as well as my experience delving deep into the unknown kept me wanting more.  The demo may not seem like enough time to experience this game and it’s not, in fact it’s hard to say how many hundreds of hours could be invested in this game before feeling like your adventure is truly over, but it’s no doubt worth the download to find out if Minecraft is the world for you.

Installation is extremely easy and quick. Once you download the game you’ll be greeted with a quickly with the logon screen. Creating an account with Mojang is also quick and painless, giving you the chance to experience the world minutes after download.

For being such a large and complex game Minecraft has an incredibly simple and easy to use interface. With an inventory screen showing your characters apparel and weapons and a list of materials you’ve collected, as well as a spot to craft new items. You shouldn’t have much trouble getting around the game, though there is much learn about the games mechanics.

  • A huge open-world sandbox to play in
  • Both survival and creative modes
  • Beautifully sharp and unique looking graphics

  • Minecraft may not be for everyone, but there sure isn’t much to complain about.

There are actually many games out there like Minecraft and more and more are being developed as the genre becomes more popular. A few to note would be Synthetic World. It’s similar to Minecrafts gameplay, but gives a much higher level detail to textures. Terraria is also another game that embarks on the creative sandbox genre which is quickly gaining popularity, though it differs from Minecraft by playing as a side scrolling adventure rather than in a 3D environment.

Minecraft quickly created a large devoted following back when it started development in 2009 and has only grown sense. If you’re curious about what all the hype is about, it’s defiantly worth trying out.
