Overview

Mobipocket Reader is a free desktop application that combines eBooks reader and RSS feeds manager. This application allows users synchronize their library across multiple devices, be it mobile device, tab or laptop.

Mobipocket Reader offers a convenient interface to organize your eBook library, RSS feeds and manage your personal eDocs. It is a flexible application compatible with a comprehensive range of file formats.

This reader gives access to ten pre-defined online eBook stores; some are international; some are local. Users can then download eBooks for free, or buy the ones that have a price tag. It is possible to import PDF, HTML, MS Office files into the program. It works well with ePub formats. When imported, all files convert to PRC automatically to fit the screen resolution of your current device.

The Mobipocket Reader supports Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Symbian devices. Users can synchronize their library across their devices using cable or Bluetooth connection. If users have cloud storage, it is possible to connect to the cloud to have access to the library.

Installation

Installation requires Internet connection. The program is compatible with Windows XP / Vista / 7 64 bit / 8 / 8 64 bit. It is freeware, clean from additional bundled items, toolbars, or nag screens.

Interface

Interface in Mobipocket Reader is easy to manage. It is nothing spectacular, though. Functions are self-descriptive. It is possible to convert and send eBooks to multiple devices.

Users can choose between varieties of view modes: three pages on the screen, two pages, one page. It is possible to read in full screen mode. You can highlight, bookmark, annotate, and comment on any text. There are options to adjust the text font and color and background color according to user preferences. Overall, the program feels flexible and pleasant to handle. It is also possible to turn the page with the help of mouse, space bar or cursor keys.

RSS reader comes handy. When browsing through eBooks stores and RSS feeds, the application looks like a web browser. When the RSS feed story opens, it looks like a web page, not reformatted text. The search function is integrated, too, and works just fine.

Features

  • Wikipedia integration and dictionary lookup come handy for students and writers.
  • Bookmarks and annotations, as well as entire library, get synchronized across multiple devices.
  • A wide choice of column layouts for books.
  • 4 different library layouts.
  • Customizable reading lists.
  • RSS reader.
  • 10 Ebook stores and the possibility to download books from your existing accounts.

Pros

The opportunity to read eBooks and RSS feeds. Users can add RSS links to the database and import news lists from OPML files.

The opportunity to create your own eBook files.

The possibility to synchronize your eBooks with various devices in the form of a reading list. It is convenient for organizing articles and books for research.

The opportunity to highlight words and entire passages, annotate, comment and bookmark them.

The possibility to edit words and paragraphs. User notes and annotations are displayed in separate Annotation panel making it easy to find the necessary bookmark.

Cons

The dictionary feature works with Wikipedia articles and local installed applications. We expected integration with online dictionaries.

Users cannot mix online sources with books in the same reading list. As a result, a user may need two lists for the same topic.

Alternatives

ePUB Reader for Windows commercialware, Reading Fanatic free, MangaMeeya Free.

Conclusion

Mobipocket Reader Desktop is a lightweight, handy application for those who prefer to read their books online. We would not recommend using it for research and organizing your online clippings. This is a convenient eBooks reader, and its main advantages are compatibility, the possibility to synchronize your library between several devices and the pleasantly looking customizable page view for reading. It is a free application, and we recommend users give it a try.
