Review & Alternatives

"Amazing open-source, non-profit video player."

Overview

High Definition or HD as it is commonly known is being applied to most modern DVD players both within computer drives and within portable DVD players. Miro (previously known as Democracy Player) is a completely free downloadable HD video player that will enable you to watch video files in HD. Additionally it also invites you to inspect and watch a huge amount of podcasts and internet TV shows all absolutely free! Miro is very easy to use and its simplicity makes it more accessible for those who are not completely technology literate. Its simple functions actually work straight away without crashing, confusion or frustration. Straightforward and to the point – that’s what all products should be.

Installation

Installation is simple and quick but not memory intensive which is a great bonus. It has no issues in installation onto all Windows platforms including XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Interface

Miro is designed to enable you to watch your video in full screen HD. Its interface is simplicity itself and it comes with a guide to help if you get into any problems. This support can be invaluable, as some players don’t offer this level of help. Miro will allow you to open and play videos of any format type. Many video players only support certain formats. Miro also allows you to subscribe to and receive BitTorrent downloads, feeds and podcasts without the need for separate program. Installation will make Bing your default internet search engine. A decent enough trade for a brilliant program.

Pros

Miro is the all-purpose HD video player and recorder. Stable and reliable, unlike many media players, Miro provides a great platform from which to make your own videos and record and upload them to the internet. Torrent support is also included for downloading and watching torrents. It has a resume facility so you can stop a video in the middle and resume when ready. Channel surfing is categorized by topic which is very helpful.

Cons

The interface could be considered a little bit labor intensive and can be a bit confusing to a newbie, but once you know what you want, it is simple to achieve. Remember there is also a very helpful guide until you find your way around.

Alternatives

There really is no comparison with other video players. Real Player is the best alternative but is beset with problems. It tends to crash and it does crash a lot, which can be very frustrating. Freezing in the middle of videos and stopping at random seem to be its forte. None of these kinds of problems with Miro and it has definitely whooshed up to top spot for video players. The small amount of disc space it takes is a bonus.

Conclusion

Miro has shown itself to be highly dependable and stable and with a range of features that are simple yet essential. Supporting all video formats and allowing conversion to suit different media uploads is just one reason why Miro is a must-have. Download a video from the internet, save it to your computer and convert to upload to your site – simple. Add to that the HD definition on video picture quality, the full size of your screen and you will be downloading faster than reading through this article!
