"ID3v1/v2 tags editor & renamer.FreeDB,Lyrics."

Overview

It’s possible that not all your audio files have the correct tags in them, or even if they have any kind of information at all. MP3TagEditor is a small utility designed to help you view and edit ID3 tags, finally giving you the chance to put some order on them. It can also automatically retrieve album information using the FreeDB function, as well as create playlists from ID3 tags.

Installation

Installation is very easy and straightforward, so you won’t have any trouble completing it. It includes the basic settings that you find in any typical program’s installation and nothing more. No viruses/malware/spyware or any other kind of 3rd party software are contained in this setup package.

The program can run under any Windows operating system.

Interface

As soon as you run the program you will be presented with the old, classic Windows style interface. There is the menu bar at the top with plenty of items (Folder, File, Edit, ID3 Tags, Export, Settings ,View and Help) and below is the toolbar for quicker access to features. On the left side is a folder-tree pane for choosing the folders that contain your audio files. The main screen is divided into two tables; the upper one is for viewing a list with the available files in the selected folder and the lower one (and most important) is where the tags are shown. The latter one has 3 tabs: Standard, Extended and Lyrics. The first tab is for editing the basic tags of the file, such as song title, artist, album, etc. and the second one is for filling in a bit more advanced information like composer and publisher. The Lyrics tab is for embedding the lyrics of the song in the file.

Pros

After having finished tagging your files, you can save them in a playlist from within MP3TagEditor. You can create an M3U, M3U Extended or PLS playlist type and the filename format that for the playlist (e.g. <album> or <album> - <artist>).

Since the software supports FreeDB information retrieval, you can just fill in all the appropriate tag information with the click of a button.

Furthermore, you can copy the name of the file and add it to the tags, if they are empty. This can save you a lot of time.

The information of the MP3 files can be exported in a list as an HTML or RTF file.

There is a playback function as well, which opens the currently selected file (or directory) with the default media player.

Cons

It has a really old GUI that makes it unattractive to modern users. In addition, it would crash when trying to open folders with many files.

Alternatives

There are so many tag editors around that it’s really hard to tell which one is the true winner in this niche. However, a few worth noting are TagScanner (free), The Godfather (free) and Mp3tag, our favorite so far.

Conclusion

MP3TagEditor is an average audio files tagging program,. It has some good features but it could use some improvement on its stability and interface.
