"Extract icons and cursors from EXE/DLL files."

Overview

IconsExtract is an icon extraction utility that can take existing cursors and icons stored in CPL, OCX, DLL and EXE files and make a copy of them for use elsewhere.

The software can search for single files to extract icons from them or run wildcard searches using the ? or * characters to locate matching names. Using the “Browse folders” button will enable the user to pick the folder and then search the files within the folder. Checking the “Search Subfolders” check box will ensure that sub folders are iterated through in order to locate the types of files that the user is looking for.

A full drive search for files containing cursors or icons can even be run by searching the entire C: drive and selecting to search the sub folders as well.

The icons and cursors located and selected can be saved as ICO and CUR files or copied directly to the clipboard to be pasted into another application afterward.

The tool is powerful and flexible, especially for users who know they've seen an icon used by an application hidden somewhere on their system but they just don't know which one. This app is powerful enough to solve such problems, let them locate the icon and then perhaps use it as their personal icon for a desktop shortcut too.

There is also command line support as well as the GUI.

Installation

There is no installation required as the software is a portable app.

No adware, toolbars, spyware or malware was included with the file archive.

IconsExtract requires Windows OS.

Interface

The interface is large to fit in all the icons that can be found with searches.

There is a menu system with top-level menu options for File, Edit, View, and Help. A small group of toolbar icons are shown under the menu providing faster access to some commands.

Located icons are displayed in the main viewer which is quite large.

A command-line system is also quite usable too for people who prefer that.

Pros

  • Search for icons and cursors contained within CPL, OCX, DLL and EXE files and extract the icons
  • Perform a folder search using specific file names or wild-card searches
  • Iterate searches through sub folders
  • Search an entire hard drive it necessary
  • Save extracted icon files as ICO files
  • Save extracted cursor files as CUR files

Cons

  • Simple interface. More instructions while using the application would have been useful.

Alternatives

IcoFX is an advanced, commercial icon editor that can also extract icons from application files.

Conclusion

IconsExtract is a handy icon and cursor extraction package which includes wild-card searches and the ability to search inside CPL, OCX, DLL and EXE files.
