"Universal instant messenger client."
Portable Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is one of the more useful immediate messenger programs because it doesn't just have one communication protocol, but actually is capable of communicating using many different ones. For instance, you can talk to someone using your own Yahoo immediate messenger (IM) account sending messages to their Yahoo IM account, through Portable Pidgin. The Pidgin app supports AOL's AIM, Yahoo, MSN Messenger, ICQ, IRC, Gadu-Gadu and several other IM networks, but alas not Skype. It's worth noting that while sending text messages is usually possible, not all the features of the native applications like the Yahoo IM app will carry over so you might not be able to video chat, for instance, whereas you could with the Yahoo IM app. On the flip side, there are many different plugins for Pidgin which extend the basic functionality to include anonymous chat and other useful functions. The application is a desktop one, but also offers this portable version which is especially useful when stored on a USB flash drive with all your IM accounts already nice configured and friends pre-imported.
Portable Pidgin (formerly Gaim) Key Features:
- Multi-protocol immediate messenger communication
- Yahoo, AIM, MSN Messenger, ICQ, IRC, Gadu-Gadu, and more more networks
- Mostly text messaging with limited video and other actions
- Solid range of plugins to extend the functionality further
- Cross-platform support
Portable Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a very capable IM application for users who desire a single application with most of their IM accounts and buddies contained in one place.
