Arachnophilia 5.5 Build 2914

Reviewed by Chris Thomas

"A full featured free HTML editor."

Overview

Arachnophilia is an all-inclusive website development/general programming utility that is designed to simplify the process of creating error-free code on a consistent basis. With functionality that most programmers would find simplistic, this commonly overlooked application emphasizes the importance of making frequently used features more accessible.

Installation

With a file size of less than 3 MB, this surprisingly powerful application consumes very little disk space and takes almost no time to download. Despite appearing to be old-fashioned in every other sense, this utility has an installation process that is quite modern, with the conventional step-by-step guide walking you through the entire setup. It is important to note that you'll need to have Java runtime engine 1.6 or newer installed in order for the setup to work.

Interface

The user interface is shockingly primitive, with a toolbar full of icons that resembles the layout of an old-fashioned videogame. Even the program font seems old-fashioned, so it is hard to believe just how powerful this compact utility is considering it's unsightly appearance.

Pros

  • Supports JavaScript development, as well as cross-platform development for the creation of code that is compatible with up to six different major web browsers, including but not limited to Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome

  • Supports development using Java, Perl, C++, and CGI frames

  • Integrated FTP client facilitates the automated upload of recently changed files to ensure that the file version on your Web server is constantly updated

  • Includes integrated tutorials on JavaScript/HTML development, using frames, and information about the Internet

  • Global find/replace tool makes it easier to quickly correct repetitive mistakes throughout the entire document

  • Fully customizable interface lets you rearrange toolbars and create user-defined templates

  • Lets you keep multiple documents open within the interface, and you can drag-and-drop text and programming elements from one document to another

  • Can import and convert RTF tables, documents, and outlines from any application that is compatible with Windows 95 into HTML

  • Latest version now supports Unicode

  • Color-coded syntax highlighting makes it easier to view and work with code components

  • Offers macro editing and creation capabilities so you can automate repetitive mundane tasks associated with Web server administration

  • Supports XHTML editing

  • Provides easy access to formatting options in the toolbar at the top of the main window

Cons

  • The user interface is very clunky and primitive looking, so this is definitely not the most aesthetically appealing software. It could definitely benefit from an upgrade.

Alternatives

Other development platforms that are similar to Arachnophilia include Notepad++, PHPEdit, and EditPlus. Of these competitors, EditPlus is the most popular and well-known, offering a feature set comparable to that of Arachnophilia , with the exception of having a more appealing user interface.

Conclusion

If you're looking for an easier way to develop webpages within a centralized control panel, Arachnophilia offers the basic features needed to facilitate web development, as well as advanced features for more experienced users.
