"Run windows apps on Linux"

Wine is a compatibility layer to help run Windows applications right from the Linux desktop. The system is not a virtual machine or an emulator per se. It attempts to run Windows applications in its own way and often is updated to be able to run certain versions of specific Windows applications. In that sense, it doesn't run a version of the Windows OS in a separate window but actually tried to run the Windows app directly from the Linux desktop. This approach is not altogether successful. Extremely hit and miss with even some versions of the same software running but other versions not running successfully. However, it is a quick and dirty way to try to run certain applications inside Wine rather than have to install a virtual manager which uses more system resources.

Wine Key Features:

  • Wine is a compatibility layer to help to run Windows apps directly on the Linux desktop
  • Not a virtual machine
  • Hit and miss for each application it tries to run
  • Uses less system resources than a virtual manager
