"Information tool for SSD/HDD"
Overview
SSD-Z is an informational tool for many types of solid state drives from different manufacturers.
The package can display information about the installed or plugged in SSD drive. This includes the SSD controller, and the technology behind the NAND chips. Whether the Trim function has been enabled on the computer and for the SSD. The S.M.A.R.T. status and a complete list of applicable attributes are just as useful for SSDs as they are for traditional platter-based drives.
Various partitions that already exist on the SSD can be seen when selecting different disk volumes. A full breakdown of the partition details can be seen and examined. Different partitions are appropriately labeled so that the user is clear what ones should not be touched and how they relate to the operation of the system.
Benchmarking can be performed on the SSD drive in order to check transfer speeds, random access timing and the IOPS benchmark data to compare the drive performance with the drive statistics from the manufacturers or against a previous platter-based drive.
Installation
The packages comes in a compressed file archive. After unpacking the archive there is only a portable executable file there.
There were no malicious software packages included with the file archive.
SSD-Z requires Windows OS.
Interface
The interface is simple and easy to understand.
There is a tabbed navigation at the top with options for Device, Smart, Partitions, Benchmark, Identify, and About.
Full device information is shown in the Device tab. S.M.A.R.T. attributes can be seen in the Smart tab. Partition information on the SSD or SSDs is displayed in the Partition tab. Benchmarking performance is setup and actioned in the Benchmark tab. The interface is pretty self-explanatory and simple to more around.
Pros
- See full details about a SSD including the NAND and other SSD-specific features
- View the existing partitions on a SSD drive
- Benchmark performance to compare the drive performance to others
- See S.M.A.R.T. information
- Displays SSD brand logo
Cons
- Limited set of features.
Alternatives
Samsung Magician is a beautiful app that is only for Samsung SSD owners, but it has disk optimization, testing, firmware updates and disk wipe features.
Conclusion
SSD-Z is a useful disk informational tool for SSD drive owners who wish to see their partition, disk information, view S.M.A.R.T. attributes, run a benchmark or set the owner information for the drive. Not a bad choice when the user wants a general SSD utility rather than a brand-specific one.
