"Unbelievable high compression rate"

Overview

KGB Archiver is a free file archive compression program that can add several files and compress them down into a small file archive to save space. The package supports a number of file archive types including ZIP, 7-ZIP, RAR, and more.

The software is capable of compressing files to a significant degree, but this does depend on the type of files being compressed and the file archive type. Therefore, results will vary and the user will only get the maximum compression possible when keeping to certain file types that a specific file archive container does a better job at compressing; mixing files types up and always using the same file archive type will not achieve the highest compression ratio.

Existing file archives can be unpacked. They can also be amended by adding new files to an existing archive and then packing them back up again.

Encryption is also included with KGB Archiver (as one might expect given the name) so AES-256 encryption is included to protect certain file archives types with 256-bit encryption for file security.

Installation

The software installed without any problems.

There were no adware, spyware, malware or other extra included with the setup package.

KGB Archiver requires Windows OS.

Interface

The interface is a simple one with a few menu items across the top, a folder tree in the left main pane and files shown in the right pane.

There are also a slim row of toolbar icons down the left side of the application window.

A system tray tool can be accessed to bring up the application quickly which will also present compression statistics on new archive creations.

Pros

  • File archiver which aims for the highest compression ratio
  • Open, unpack, amend and compress ZIP, 7-Zip, RAR and other file archive formats
  • Includes AES-256, 256-bit level encryption inside suitable file archives that support it
  • System tray tool to access the archiver and provides information bubbles about compression levels achieved on new archives
  • Free

Cons

  • Plain interface.
  • More limited list of supported file archives than other file archival software

Alternatives

PeaZip is a good alternative which comes in a 32-bit64-bit and portable version.

Conclusion

KGB Archiver is an acceptable file archive utility that can open, unpack, amend and compress several archive file types. It includes the AES-256 encryption standard to secure the file archives that it can create successfully. Old fashioned interface.
