Installation

During the setup you will be asked which edition you want to install, choosing between “Handy backup”, which is recommended for single PC or server users, “Handy Backup Server”, if you want to back up multiple computers over the network, and “Backup Network Workstation” which lets you back up your data with Backup Server. After choosing the one that best fits your needs you can proceed with the installation normally. When it’s finished your browser will redirect you to the developer’s website, asking you to fill out a survey. Only newer versions of Windows are supported (Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 7 and 2008/2003 Server).

Interface

The interface is pretty simple and regular without any decorating features, focusing on the program’s main purpose. Upon running it you will be guided through a startup wizard that will help you safeguard your files step by step to save time. At the bottom of the window there is a log keeping track of all the actions that take place, a methodical way to keep things organized and uncluttered even after extended periods of use.

Pros

Its tidy and uncomplicated design makes it approachable for everyone, eliminating all sorts of confusing terms and commands and keeping only basic functions needed for backing up or restoring your files, significantly reducing time taken to complete a task. Creating a backup of an entire disk could be a long process and sometimes it is crucial to finish as soon as possible.

Handy Backup can also use plug-ins to make backups of your programs like Skype, Photoshop and others, or plug-ins such as Image Backup and MySQL Server Backup for more advanced use. In addition to that, you can develop your own plug-ins to enhance the program’s functionality.

You can backup your data on various locations including your own computer, CD/DVDs, network computers, FTP/SFTP, online backup or even Amazon S3 as options.

Cons

While this program does not offer something really unique compared to other file protection software, you can rest assured that it will not disappoint you as it will carry out the tasks it’s meant for. It did the job smooth in our tests, with no problems to report.

Alternatives

Two equally respectable substitutes are Paragon Backup & Recovery and O&O DiskImage. The first one is almost identical to Handy Backup, with their main difference being that Paragon Backup and Recovery has a freeware edition as well. O&O DiskImage on the other hand is shareware only, but includes a lot more features, such as cloning drives or creating ISO images of the system and burning them on CD/DVD/Blu-ray.
