"permanently erase files and folders"

Overview

Super File Shredder is a file shredding package that offers secure file overwriting in order to remove the file and ensure it cannot be recovered later by using a file recovery software package.

The software uses the US DOD 5220.22-M method where the location where the file data is stored is overwritten several times in order to ensure that the file data can never be recovered. This is different from simply emptying the Recycle Bin which removes the identifying file information but doesn't actually overwrite any of the data at all.

The process of overwriting can take a while and is partly dependent on how fast the hard drive is that the data is being overwritten on.

There is a convenient drag and drop process which means the user can highlight the files and folders that they wish to permanently delete and drag them from Windows Explorer over to this application. Once added, starting the process will begin the routine to overwrite all of those files and folders added to the list.

There are no alternative erasure methods offered unlike with some other data erasing software.

Installation

The installation completed without any issues.

There was no malware, spyware, adware or toolbars included in the setup package.

Super File Shredder requires Windows 8, 7, Vista, 2003, XP or 2000.

Interface

The interface is fairly basic, but this has its advantages because it is not difficult to understand how to use the software package.

There are three columns listing the files that have been added for secure shredding. Files can be manually added or drag and dropped over the application to add them to the application.

On the right side are command buttons for Add, Clear, Start and Exit. There are quick hot keys included with the buttons.

The software states at the top that it uses the US DOD 5220.22-M erasure method to overwrite where data is stored to ensure the files are deleted securely and cannot be recovered later by file recovery software.

Pros

  • Secure file erasure tool
  • Uses US DOD 5220.22-M erasure method
  • Drag and drop files into the application ready for erasure
  • Add files manually
  • Clear button easily remove files mistakenly added to the file for removal

Cons

  • No other erasure methods available for selection.

Alternatives

File Shredder has multiple overwriting options including a 7 pass shred option. Other software with similar functionality are: east-tec Eraser, UltraShredder, O&O SafeErase, Eraser, and Zer0.

Conclusion

Super File Shredder is a decent file shredder but it only offers one method of shredding files. However, it does support drag and drop which could make it easier to use in conjunction with Windows Explorer.
