"Encrypting tool"

Overview

Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA is a mini encryption program to keep private information safer than it would otherwise be when stored on a personal computer.

The software uses the secure Twofish encryption algorithm which will certainly provide an increased sense of security when using this package. When encrypting a file using Twofish, the original unencrypted file can be securely deleted to ensure that it can never be recovered again. This provides a protective shield for important files from that point on.

There is a drop box provided within the interface so users can access Windows Explorer, highlight the files they wish to encrypt and then simply drag them across to the drop box within the Drag'n'Crypt interface.

The utility cannot encrypt files up to any size. It works on the principal that half the currently available memory can be used for the encryption, therefore if 4 GB is free memory, then a 2 GB file can be encrypted using the package. To encrypt beyond this physical limit, a different encryption package that is more robust will need to be used instead.

The tool previously used Blowfish to encrypt data, but this is not accessible any longer with the latest version which uses Twofish.

Installation

The installation completed without any issues.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included with the setup package.

Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA requires Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8.

Interface

The interface is a target-shaped drop zone tool which appears on the Windows desktop. There is a context menu which can be accessed through this interface.

Drag files right over to this target and they can be dropped on it to initiate the encryption facilities within the software.

Settings include the ability to specify whether the original source file should be securely erased after a new encrypted version has been created and setting how transparent the drop zone icon is.

Pros

  • Quick and efficient Twofish file encryption
  • Can securely delete the original source file when creating an encrypted copy
  • Target icon sits on the desktop
  • Adjust the transparency of the target

Cons

  • Limited to file sizes that are approximately half the currently available RAM memory
  • No good choice of encryption methods
  • Basic interface
  • Basic settings
  • Secure deletion option to overwrite the original file before discarding it

Alternatives

Encryptr is an encryption package aimed at user who wish to backup their data at the cloud but not rely on the encryption used by cloud providers.

Conclusion

Drag'n'Crypt ULTRA is a minimal file encryption tool that allows the dragging and dropping of files over the utility's icon in order begin the Twofish encryption process.
