"The zombies are coming…back. It’s about time!"
Plants vs Zombies was a tower defense like game that became a quick success. With Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time, developer PopCap has done well to improve on the original formula. The game has the same premise as before, but with much larger mission variety, loads of new plants and zombies, with enough bonus content to keep you coming back. It’s a good example of a quality sequel, but one that will strongly encourage you to empty your wallet.
The game is free to download and free to play, though there is additional tempting content around every corner that you’ll have to bust out your wallet to enjoy many of the added features in Plants vs Zombies 2. That’s not to say that the game is a rip-off, only that if you wanted to explore all the additional levels and content, you’re looking at paying a hefty bill. Either way you look at it, you’re still getting much more content in the free version of the sequel than you would have in the original game. You’ll play three different zones that include Egyptian, Pirate, and Cowboy time frames. Mixing up the type of enemies you encounter through-out each zone is a welcomed edition.
Plants vs Zombies 2 also adds new elements to the game by giving players powerful little seeds that can give your plants a powerful boost for a short time. There’s also three special abilities that players can use, allowing you to pop the heads off zombies, create chains of lighting, and tossing enemies into each other. Both of these new mechanics can be used without spending any money, but they’ll recharge very slowly. There’s also plenty of new plants to combat zombies with, some of them requiring a nearly impossible grind or in-app purchases. Though, you should be able to unlock enough free plants to progress through most of the game.
You can download Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time on Android, iOS, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Each game can be downloaded in the appropriate store. Requires Android 2.3 or higher. iOS 5.1 or later.
The game is as bright and colorful as ever, with easy to navigate menus for players of any skill level. There’s an in-depth tutorial that will walk you through everything you need to know about the game.
- Fun and enjoyable tower-defense like game.
- Comical humor between plants and zombies add to the experience.
- Way more content than its predecessor.
- In-App purchases can get expensive trying to unlock additional plants, levels, or gaining additional powers.
I haven’t quite seen a game quite like plants vs zombies, but there are plenty of tower-defense like games out there. Fieldrunners for iOS comes close to similar tower defense as you defend and control the field using a diverse selection of upgradable towers in a limitless adventure. Robo Defense is a more robotic themed tower defense game that offers plenty of open maps, upgrades, and achievements to enjoy.
Plants vs Zombies 2: It’s About Time is a good example of a great sequel. It improves on the previous entry by not taking away from what made it such a popular game, with loads of levels, plants, zombies, and content to make the game feel new and intriguing. Even though in-app purchases can feel demanding, you’re still getting plenty of free enjoyable gameplay without paying a dime.
