"Simple note-taking. Powerful ideas.."

Overview

Tomboy is a robust, cross-platform notetaking utility that focuses on simplifying the process of organizing ideas/information in an interface that is conducive to productivity. This software was specifically designed to make the process of retaining and recollecting data easier.

Installation

At a file size of little more than 6 MB, the Tomboy installation package downloads quickly and is relatively compact. Before running the installer you'll need to install Mono-projects GTK# for .NET 2.12.10 or newer. You'll also need to have at least .NET Framework 3.5 installed in your operating system.

Interface

The Tomboy interface is very user-friendly, with a search bar located at the top of the main window that makes it easy to find specific strings of text within any one of the files saved in your library. The left side of the screen contains a 'Notebooks' pane that lists the various categories that you can create, edit, and delete via the right-click context menu.

Pros

  • Simplified text highlighting makes it easy to emphasize certain components in a text file

  • Undo/redo editing options keep you from making unnecessary mistakes and give you the freedom to move back and forth until you're satisfied with the end result

  • Lets you create bulleted lists for more effective notetaking

  • Automatically link created content with the web and your e-mail addresses

  • Integrated spellchecker continually ensures proper spelling by pointing out errors and recommending corrections

  • Save files to notebooks for better organization

  • You can pin specific notes to the Windows taskbar so that they're easier to access when you need them

  • Quickly link notes and ideas together using the “Link” button. Linking notes makes it easier to quickly organize them into categories from directly within the notetaking interface. Any links you make between notes remain intact even if the notes are renamed or relocated to another directory on the hard drive

  • Surprisingly uncluttered interface makes this software run smoothly due to decreased utilization of system resources

  • Table of Contents view lists notes in chronological order based on when they were modified last. This feature is particularly useful because it shows you all of the files you recently created using Tomboy within a centralized directory, regardless of whether they were saved to server locations on the hard drive

  • Open-source functionality makes it possible to extend and enhance the functionality of Tomboy using one of the many third-party add-ins that have been contributed by community developers

Cons

  • Some users have complained that the text editor only offers basic style and font adjustments, however extensive formatting capabilities are not included. Nonetheless, some people feel that this additional feature is not necessary given the fact that the application is designed to facilitate notetaking and not document creation

Alternatives

Other popular notetaking software that could compare to Tomboy include Evernote, Microsoft OneNote, CintaNotes, Nevernote, and wikidPad.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a better way to study for school, create comprehensive business plans, or simply manage your daily tasks and goals, Tomboy for Windows offers an excellent notetaking solution that is geared towards productivity and brainstorming.
