Overview

Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 is a collective update for the Microsoft Office 2010 office suite which includes improvements for Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and other apps offered with the Office suite.

The service pack includes public fixes as well as unreleased fixes for various products within the Office 2010 range of apps. The updates boast modest product improvements, bug fixes, stability improvements, performance improvements, and program adjustments to button-down on security.

The public updates released for Office 2010 up to June 2011 are included within the Service Pack 1 release. Cumulative updates up to April 2011 are also bundled into this Service Pack release too.

Installation

There is both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010. These can be accessed from the Microsoft update page.

The manual installation of the Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 is a time-consuming process. The download itself uses the Windows Installer 3.1, is approximately 362 MB, takes considerable time to download and includes many different patches and updates within the Service Pack.

It is also possible to install the update via the Microsoft Update program.

If the user is unclear which version (32-bit or 64-bit) that they have installed, they can check this in their Office package by following these short instructions:

  1. Open any of the Office 2010 products.
  2. Click File on the Menu bar.
  3. Look at the left pane and select Help.
  4. Locate the Office version shown in the right pane.

There was no malicious software included within the update for Microsoft Office 2010.

Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 requires Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Interface

Running the installation, there is no actual interface to consider. The updating package takes the user through the steps and confirms what packages are being updated at the time. Usually there is no need to reboot Windows during the updating processes, but it may require the closure of Office 2010 and the restarting of it to let the updates complete. It would be advisable to not try to continue working within an Office 2010 app while the update is being performed.
