"An easy-to-use defragmentation software."

Overview

WinContig is a selective defragmentation tool which is quite an unusual concept. Usually a defragmentation tool aims to defrag the whole drive or drives on the system. This tool instead looks only to defrag the files and folders that the user selects. The advantage to this approach is that whilst it may not improve overall Windows performance, it potentially can help quickly improve the load time of key files and documents that the user is finding are loading sluggishly of late.

Another benefit of the selective defrag process is that it reduces the defragmentation process down from a multi-hour overnight affair to something that can be completed in minutes or an hour or so for the most defragmented small collection of files.

Statistics are displayed after the defrag process has completed. These are color coded with the key given to make it easier to visually see what was defragmented, what was not and what percentage were successfully defragmented by using the software.

The software also supports profiles of files which can be saved and then loaded back in another time to defrag the same list of files once again. This is especially useful when the list of favorite files to defrag are situated all over one or more hard drives.

The app is also portable so it can be copied to a USB flash drive and then be used on other computer as well.

Installation

The software is not actually installed. It comes with a 32-bit and a 64-bit version in the folder once the file archive has been unpacked. Therefore, this folder can be copied into the Program Files folder area, but a shortcut will need to be created in order to access it easily in the future.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or other unwanted extras with the software.

WinContig requires a Windows OS to run.

Interface

The interface is modern and attractive. There is an extensive menu system with options for File, Profiles, Action, View, Tools, Options and Help. Below this are a series of readable toolbar buttons to help facilitate the use of the software package.

Objects can be added for defragmentation and they can then be seen in the next window. Processed files are then shown in the window below that with the file names, number of fragments and clusters shown.

A navigational tab at the bottom offers Fragmented Files or Errors as the two choices.

There is also a color code key in the footer of the window which clarifies which files are fragmented, which are contiguous, defragmented files and those not processed.

Pros

  • Defrag only the files and folders selected
  • Save time not having to defrag the complete hard drive system
  • Save selected files and folders as a profile and reload the profile another time to defrag those same files once again
  • Defrag reports are color coded to make them easier to scan

Cons

None.

Alternatives

DefragglerAuslogics Disk Defrag, or O&O Defrag are good options to test.

Conclusion

WinContig is a handy mini defragmenting utility that lets the user only defrag the files and folders that they select rather than the whole drive system. This can prioritize only the files the user accesses most often and saves on maintenance time.
