"Free archiver utility, open 7Z RAR ZIP files"

Overview

PeaZip is a powerful file/archive manager that gives you the ability to create, convert, and extract data in almost all known archive formats. The functionality is based on the open-source engine of the renowned file manager 7-zip, so reliability and performance are both strong attributes.

Installation

Downloading and installing PeaZip is a hasslefree process that computer users of all skill levels can complete. Compatible with all recent versions of Linux (download PeaZip for Linux) and Windows, including NT, 98, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Server 2008, and 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit).

Interface

The interface integrates seamlessly with the Windows operating system because you can quickly drag and drop files from Windows Explorer or your desktop into the archiving or decompression screen. Intelligently labeled button icons make the functionality self-explanatory and intuitive, even for the most non-technological users. Novices will find the preset default settings to be satisfactory for creating and extracting most archives, while advanced users will appreciate the additional encryption and conversion settings available.

Pros

  • Compatible with over 130 archive formats, including but not limited to ACE, 7Z, ARJ, ARC, CAB, BZ2, DMG, ISO, GZ, LHA, PEA, PAQ, TAR, RAR, WIM, UDF, ZIPX, and ZIP

  • Multilingual interface can be installed in 29 different languages

  • Quickly locate duplicate files within multiple archives to eliminate unnecessary disk space consumption

  • Convert any type of archive into another with a few clicks of the mouse

  • Lets you password protect archives using industry-standard encryption technology

  • Integrated thumbnail viewer makes it easy to view previews of media files directly within the user interface

  • Search function makes it easy to find specific content within archives

  • Save batch scripts to automate GUI operations

  • Secure deletion feature erases archives and then writes over them to ensure that they cannot be recovered from your hard drive

  • Two-factor authentication safeguards archives from being hacked so that they can't be viewed by third-parties without permission

  • Drag-And-Drop functionality makes it easy to add files and archives to the main window for quick compression/decompression

  • Quickly split a single archive into two, or join two archives into one

  • Combines functionality from several successful open source software like 7-zip, PAQ, FreeArc, and UPX to create an all-inclusive solution that is unparalleled in its capabilities

Cons

  • Nothing to mention so far.

Alternatives

There are plenty of other applications available online that aid in the process of converting, decompressing, compressing, and editing files and archives, the most notable of which include 7-Zip, the Unarchiver, WinRAR, WinZip, Universal Extractor, and IZArc. However, PeaZip is a powerful multi-platform solution that includes all of the features contained within the aforementioned applications and more.

Conclusion

By providing a centralized interface in which you can perform all file/archive management tasks, PeaZip has quickly become an industry-leading program. Going beyond the typical functionality of a conventional file manager, the software outdoes most competitors by building upon 7-Zip's already strong foundation.

Requirements: Any Windows version. Linux and BSD versions are available on software website.

What's new in this version: Tabbed browsing, support for full and absolute paths, improved archive conversion.
