Review & Alternatives

"Easy-to-use Windows Task Manager alternative."

Overview

SterJo Task Manager is a task manager replacement which provides easier access to the list of running processes, startup programs within the Registry, running Windows Services, and the processes being used on network connections.

The purpose of the tool is to give the user a greater degree of control of the running processes, running Windows Services and network connections. Users can drill down to individual processes, review detailed information about them and even perform a quick look-up online if they're not sure what program the process relates to. Processes can have their priority altered in order to help given certain frequently used applications a more responsive feel to them.

The look of the application is pretty similar to other such task manager replacements.

Installation

The installation required 2.9 MB of available space. The installation proceeded without incident. There were no malicious software was installed during the setup procedure.

SterJo Task Manager requires Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Interface

The interface is clean and pretty typical for a Windows task manager replacement.

There is a minimal menu system which only includes two options for File and Help. Below the minimal menu are nine small toolbar options providing quick access to some of the options available.

The main window includes a four tabbed windowed view with Process, Registry, Services and Connections.

With the main Process window, each current process is shown. There are many columns for displaying the information about each current process. Selecting and right-clicking on a process brings up a context menu with options for Killing the process, Setting the priority, Adjusting file properties, or Performing a search online based on the process name to learn more about what program the process relates to.

Pros

  • Replacement task manager
  • Review each running process
  • Change the priority of a process
  • Kill a process
  • View and change the Windows startup programs that are set in the Registry to load each time Windows is loaded. View and manage the list of Windows startup programs.
  • View Windows Services and pause, resume or delete a given service.
  • See the network connections and the processes that relate to these network connection.

Cons

Not possible to permanently set the priority of different processes.

Alternatives

System Explorer is a task manager with similar features and interface, but also includes attractive overlays with system information and it can permanently store priority settings for processes.

Conclusion

SterJo Task Manager is a good task manager replacement that can do more than the Windows task manager offers and doesn't use too many resources while running either.
