"Resize windows to predefined sizes"

Overview

For web developers and web designers they often have the problem of remembering that different users have different sized screens. Whether it is an older 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 screen resolution, something larger, or a smaller resolution from a mobile device, it is useful to appreciate what a web app or web site design will look like to users with very different screen resolutions. Often times there is no easy way to do this.

Trying to change your video resolution each time is a real pain to deal with and messes up the layout of all your desktop icons into the bargain. Manipulating a window manually to try to approximately what a small screen resolution will look like in their web browser isn't ideal either as there is much guesswork involved in such an attempt. Sizer is the answer to these problems for eager web designers and developers.

The software provides the option to change the size of a window by providing several window resizing options to change the width and height. For anyone who needs to take a series of in-app or on-site screen shots with a specific width then the ability to fix the width and height of the viewing window is equally useful and can save time having to try to capture exactly the same screen area every time or needing to use a graphics package to resize the screen capture later.

Installation

The installation uses a small file which is truly tiny and installs in a split second. Nothing to it and then you're up and running. No malicious content was included inside the installation.

Interface

The interface works in a number of different ways.

Moving the mouse over to the bottom right corner of a window will bring up the arrow that points north-west and south-east. At this point, hitting the right mouse button will bring up the preset window size options to instantly resize that window to the new size.

Each window also has a new option from the top left corner program icon which can be right clicked to bring up the new “Resize / Reposition” option where the user can change the size of the current window.

There is also the system tray icon which can be used with the right click on the mouse button to bring up resizing options there.

Configuring Sizer can be done through the menu option of the same name. Users can create their own custom window sizes and decide whether the window is then movable as well as resizable.

Pros

  • Resize windows to a preset size
  • Several ways to quickly access window resizing controls
  • Create custom window sizes
  • Decide if the window can be moved as well
  • Useful for web developers

Cons

  • None.

Alternatives

ZoneSize can set up different sized areas (zones) on your desktop and when moving a window inside those zones, it snaps into position with the specified dimensions of that particular zone. Another option is AutoSizer. Out of these 3, Sizer works best.

Conclusion

Sizer is the ideal little app for busy web developers and designers who want to be able to resize a web browser window to different sizes to approximate how browsing at a different screen resolution will look for different users of a web app or web site. This app will do just that for them. Editors looking to capture a screenshot of a window at a specific size, will find Sizer useful as well.
