"An OpenGL graphics card utility for Windows."

Overview

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) Caps Viewer is a compact utility that monitors and displays your graphics card activity statistics. This application is ideal for gamers or anyone else who wants to get the most out of their computer's graphics, as it provides a starting point from which you can prepare and optimize your hardware.

Installation

With a file size of only about 3 MB, this application downloads and installs very quickly with the help of a wizard-style setup guide that guides users to completion. A standalone version can also be downloaded which requires no installation; simply launch the application as is. Compatible with Windows 2K, XP, 2003, Vista, and 7.

Interface

The user interface couldn't be more simplistic, as it does not require any effort on behalf of the user to begin displaying GPU graphics statistics. Simply launch the application and an extensive list of GPU/CPU, OpenGL, OpenCL, and CUDA performance attributes will appear. There is also the 'Tools' tab that displays a drop-down menu of Nvidia graphics drivers list, provides access to use for Internet links, includes pixel shader and vertex shader validation buttons, as well as the option to create a full XML export of the current GPU data.

Pros

  • Displays information about various attributes of your GPU, including device ID, GPU temperature, shader cores, BIOS, maximum and current clock speeds, driver, and GPU load

  • Simplifies the process of diagnosing computer hardware problems and finding optimal solutions by providing detailed feedback

  • Displays system configuration information, including CPU type/speed, available system memory, and operating system type

  • GPU burner feature lets you cause the GPU temperature to rise intentionally to test the stability of the graphics card

  • View OpenCL data, including number of attached CL devices, and statistics pertaining to global/local memory, 2D/3D image size, custom buffer, clock, work item sizes, driver name, extensions, and work group size

  • Doesn't require any input on behalf of the user. Simply launch the program and the ensuing hardware statistics as they are displayed

  • You can launch an OpenCL or OpenGL demo, view the number of CUDA devices attached, and view core data like computer compatibility, grid size, shader clock, and multiprocessors

Cons

  • Uses a significant amount of system resources, so performance may be affected slightly during scan times, which is to be expected though

Alternatives

Notable alternatives to GPU Caps Viewer include GPU-Z, SIW (System Information for Windows), AIDA64, and HWINFO32. Of these competitors, GPU-Z offers the most similar functionality. SIW and the other alternatives offer more general solutions, displaying statistics pertaining to a wide variety of hardware attributes.

Conclusion

If you're looking for an easy and convenient way to view the statistics of your graphics processing unit, GPU Caps Viewer offers the functionality you need and more. With the ability to export reports, tested compatibility with all major graphics cards, and a self-explanatory user interface that anyone can use to analyze their hardware's performance, this program makes a valuable addition to any graphics lover's toolset.
