"Cloud Backup For Your Files"

Overview

ZipCloud is a cloud storage service which offers some degree of file storage online for users. The software is available for Kindle Fire, Blackberry, Android, iPhone and iPad. A convenient Windows and Mac app is available. There is also the option to use the web version to access the ZipCloud account in a web browser when using Windows, Mac or Linux. The apps will sync between the app and the ZipCloud to ensure that people with multiple devices will stay updated.

Free accounts can be used. The storage offering is not stated outright, however the ZipCloud web site does advise that upgrading to a paid account will provide an unlimited storage feature. However, the small print does include the words “normal use” so it is not entirely clear how unlimited they really mean.

Files are secured via 256-bit SSL encryption to ensure that file data cannot be read by anyone intercepting the data stream either during the upload or download of files between the ZipCloud app(s) and the ZipCloud servers.

Files and folders can be shared with other people. This is useful when wanting to share an organized collection of files or avoiding sending many photos over email.

File versioning is also included. This is where more than one copy of a file is kept so that the user can access older versions of the same file should they need to.

Video and audio can be streamed on the go directly from the ZipCloud. This is useful for anyone who lacks increased storage space on their mobile device and would benefit from storing media in the cloud and accessing it that way. Bear in mind that using a fiber-optic internet connection will be far cheaper than a cellular connection if choosing to stream media this way.

Installation

Installation went smoothly once a username/email and password has already been setup on the web site. No additional software was added during the setup process.

ZipCloud works with a number of versions of Windows including Windows 8/8.1. Requires .NET Framework 2.0 or later.

Interface

The Windows interface has some large toolbar buttons for different functions. These are Backup, Drag and Drop, My Files, Restore, Sync Folder, Settings, and Help.

There is an “Update” button to the right side to update the software to the latest version. The installed version is confirmed below the button.

Backups can display with the available space, space used, backed up files, backup schedule, and the next backup. There is a large “Start Backup“ button to the right of the backup information.

Pros

  • Store files in the ZipCloud
  • Cross-platform support with Windows, Mac, Linux, Kindle Fire, iOS, Android and Blackberry apps or support
  • Versioning to enable access to multiple copies of each file going back a period of time
  • Share files and folders with others
  • Stream video or audio from a ZipCloud account without needing to download it
  • Unlimited accounts with paid accounts
  • Trial version

Cons

  • Less well-known cloud provider
  • Not as much information available about the product on the website.

Conclusion

ZipCloud is a useful cloud provider with a possible unlimited storage option for paid users. The cloud service is supported by many apps.
