"Video capture and processing program."

Overview

VirtualDub is a diverse video processing/capturing application that gives you the ability to trim/clean video files before exporting them to external media or another program for additional editing. While the software certainly is not the most extensive video processing program, it makes dubbing, trimming, and adjusting basic video attributes very easy.

Installation

This program is surprisingly compact, with a file size of a little more than 1.5 MB, and is therefore easy to download and install. With a self-explanatory wizard style setup process, you'll only be required to press OK/Next a few times and select a couple of simple preferences. VirtualDub is compatible with all versions of Windows. Note: If you want to avoid the installation of a third-party toolbar, be sure to check the "Custom Installation" box and select only the components that you like to install.

Interface

At first glance, the user interface appears to be a bit old-fashioned, with a boxy gray theme that tends to remind you of the old Microsoft Paint set up. However, this old-school look makes it easy to get used to, especially considering that most features are accessible via intuitive button icons along the bottom frame, as well as seven menus located along the top taskbar – File, Edit, Video, Audio, Options, Tools, and Help.

Pros

  • Lets you monitor volume input levels using a built-in histogram/volume meter

  • Supports noise reduction, field swapping, and downsizing in real time

  • Gives you the ability to access video resolutions that your graphics card supports but is currently not set up to display, such as 352x480

  • Offers hotkeys and mouse shortcuts that expedite the process of initiating operations (for example, you can press F6 to perform a video capture).

  • Lets you adjust frame rates to the precise decimal point (instead of being restricted to a value of 28 or 29, you can choose 29.95)

  • Supports verbose monitoring, including the ability to supervise CPU usage, compression levels, and available disk space

Cons

  • Some users have stated that they would prefer if the button icons had better associated explanations, as this would make it easier to become accustomed to them.

Alternatives

Although VirtualDub is unique in that it specializes in dubbing, trimming, and capturing specific segments of video files, there are a plethora of other free video processing utilities available, including OpenShot (Linux), Avidemux, iMovie, and Windows Live Movie Maker. Of these competitors, OpenShot is by far the most popular, but it is designed for the Linux operating system.

Conclusion

Although the software is not as powerful as a robust video editing suite like Adobe Premiere, it serves its function well by giving you a convenient interface in which you can make minor adjustments to video files quickly and easily before processing them further in a more powerful software. As such, it makes a perfect addition to any digital video enthusiasts toolset.
