"MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition"

Overview

MiniTool Partition Wizard server Demo is a limited time trail of the server-based partition manager from MiniTool. The company offers a host of different partition managers, but this one is targeting the kind of features that system administrators will need including access to network drives. The software can run happily on Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012 and Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. This last point is useful because not every server actually runs the Windows Server OS; many get by with standard Windows installations.

Partitions can be remove, adjusted, re-sized or relocated. Physical disks can be seen and their respective partitions so it is clear which partitions are actually on which drives. Manage dynamic disks. Convert disks between a GPT disk and MBR disk.

Installation

The full installation requires 56 MB to be completely installed. The default destination folder for the setup is pre-selected but the user can manually navigate to a folder of their choosing and select this instead.

A Start menu item and desktop icon can be created, but no Quick launch icon is offered during the installation. No malicious programs were added during setup.

Interface

The interface of Partition Wizard Server demo is similar to what other partition manager applications look like.

The Actions and Wizards are shown down the left side bar. Both Wizards and Operations get their own section with many choices linked from there.

The hard drives located are shown to the right of the side bar. The master boot record gets the main focus, with the main drives then shown with their drive letter, drive type (NTFS, FAT32, etc), capacity of the drive and percentage used presently. A blue bar chart above these details provides a quick visual indication of how full that particular drive is.

Below the drive sections is a different layout which shows the drive details one by one from left to right with a row allotted for each drive and partition. Disks are separated into their own sections, with their partitions shown beneath the disks, therefore it is easy to see what partitions below to which physical drive. Nice.

Pros

  • Server-based partition management
  • Access physical drives and their partitions across networks
  • Prtitions can be remove, adjusted, re-sized or relocated.
  • Physical disks can be seen and their respective partitions
  • Manage dynamic disks.
  • Convert disks between a GPT disk and MBR disk.
  • Runs on Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2012 and Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8

Cons

  • Pricey software.

Alternatives

Partition Magic is a classic partition manager that provides most of the options people need when managing disks.

Conclusion

MiniTool Partition Wizard server Demo is a good partition manager package with network features. It is well organized with excellent features, but the server package is quite expensive.
