Review & Alternatives

"Little and safe video player"

Overview

You’ve certainly heard and used many video players in the past, but do you know GoPlayer? Well then, this review will teach you some things about this software so keep on reading if you’re interested. It is lightweight and has many settings for users to tweak regarding video and audio. Additionally, GoPlayer automatically searches and downloads subtitles for your videos.

Installation

The ~500kb file you download initially is the download manager for GoPlayer, so run it and let it download GoPlayer. After this task is complete, GoPlayer will be automatically installed and then you’ll be asked if you want to install an additional software, QType. Decline this if you wish and close the download manager. Bad thing is, all associations with media files will be lost and GoPlayer will be set as the default player for them without giving you a choice on this matter.

Supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.

Interface

The program doesn’t have a particularly interesting interface. Opening it without loading a video will have a part of your desktop as its background (you can change that from the settings window if you wish) and hovering your mouse over the top and bottom sides will reveal the toolbar and the playback controls respectively. In the center of the window is the “Open File” button.

Pros

There’s very few information as to what kind of video and audio formats are supported by GoPlayer; it’s safe to say though that the common audio/video files are supported (.avi, .mkv, .wmv, .mp4, .mp3, .wma, .flac etc.). It uses low system resources therefore you won’t have trouble watching videos that can be played in it.

The program allows you to configure several audio and video settings as well. You can access them by right-clicking anywhere on the window and going to the appropriate menus (Audio, Display, Playback, etc.) and by using the toolbar buttons.

GoPlayer has a subtitle finding tool integrated, which searches the Legendas Brazil subtitle database to find matching subtitles for your videos.

Cons

Well it has quite a few cons. Firstly, from the moment GoPlayer is installed in your computer it updates all associations and registers them with itself without asking you. Secondly, it closes sometimes when you pause a video and switch to another window. Furthermore, once in a while it has trouble playing videos correctly (audio plays fine but a green screen is shown).

Alternatives

Media Player Classic (free), VLC (free), KMPlayer (free), GOM Media Player (free), XMPlay (free), MPlayer (free) are all respectable audio/video players, whilst Winamp (free and Pro editions available), MediaMonkey (paid) and Banshee (free) are mainly audio players that support playback of video files. When it comes to video playback the best ones VLC, MPC and KMPlayer; as for music, Winamp is the best way to go.

Conclusion

GoPlayer has a lot of potential, but until it reaches the point where it can be considered as a fully-featured, stable media player it has a long way to go. Nevertheless, there are many good features of the program (especially the countless video and audio configurations available) that make the program worth checking out.
