Update 3: Windows 10 is out and here's how to download the official ISO files.

Just a couple of days ago, Microsoft announced their upcoming new OS, Windows 10. Today, they have uploaded the very first Windows 10 Technical Preview, and you can download it now. Essentially, this is a beta version of Windows 10, and a very unstable version at that. Microsoft recommends that you install this only on an old computer that you no longer use, or at the very least on a virtual machine. There are still plenty of bugs and issues that need to be worked out, and data loss is still a definite possibility with this young version of the OS.

For those interested in trying out the technical preview, you can head over to Microsoft's website for more information about downloading and installing the beta, as well as more information about the potential risks of running the OS. Alternatively, we also have the direct links to the ISO file for the preview, so you can start your download right away. You'll still need to sign up for Microsoft's Windows Insider Program in order to activate your preview, but this can help you get a head start on setting up your VM:

Build 9841 - this is the first release

Build 9860 ISOs

Build 9860 did not come with official ISOs as it was released through the Windows automatic updates system. We did cover Creating a Bootable ISO from the Install.ESD file, which might come in handy.

Build 9879 ISOs

Build 9926 ISOs

Build 10041 ISOs

Build 10074/April ISOs

Build 10130 ISOs

Build 10162 ISOs

We assume anyone that is this eager to get a first look at Windows 10, likely has a PC capable of handling the OS. However, just in-case your curious about the system requirements, here they are (and they might come in handy with VMs as well):

  • Minimum 1GHz Processor
  • Minimum 1GB RAM (2GB for 64-bit)
  • Minimum 16GB Free Disk Space
  • DirectX9 + WMMD Driver
  • Internet Connection

As mentioned above, all users of the preview will need to participate in the Windows Insider Program, which is where Microsoft asks for feedback about the OS. This is going to be a great way to let your voice be heard and make your suggestions about what needs to be fixed/changed. We're not sure exactly how the feedback program is going to work, but hopefully it is effective.
