The company known for its unmissable bright orange protective outer layer for its drives is often the go to provider of robust storage solutions that can survive the rigors of travel of photographers, journalists and travel bloggers who need to store copious amount of data on secure drives during their explorations and bring them home safely at the end of their trip.

The storage unit itself is a bit larger than previous LaCie drives but this is because it stores 4 terabytes of data in a RAID 0 array. There is both a USB 3.0 cable and a Thunderbolt cable which can deliver 240 MB/s of data transfer which will surely please Apple computer owners.

Switching To RAID 1 Setup

The drive has the option to switch from a RAID 0 array to a RAID 1 array. With RAID 0, the two x 2 terabyte hard drives act as one. With RAID 1, the second 2 terabyte drive mirrors the data stored on the first 2 terabyte drive which provides an extra layer of protection should one of the drives malfunction, develop a fault or become damaged during transit.

Shock Resistance

The rugged package ensures some degree of shock resistance as well. LaCie suggest that their RAID portable drive can withstand a drop from 5 feet or pressure of up to one ton. The outside armor is made of rubber and the device has an IP 54 rating to certify that it can withstand dust and some minor accidental water splashing like when knocking a glass of water over it. As you do.

For people who need both a good amount of hard drive storage and protection from various risks to the data, this new RAID portable drive from LaCie could be an ideal choice.
