Whilst you use you computer throughout the day, many files are read from and written to. As a performance optimization, the operating system keeps copies of files and applications in your free memory which is faster than reading from disk each time, this is known as "caching".

However there can come a point where a large part of your ram is cluttered with files you don't need anymore, the computer cannot know this.

Now when an application needs more 'free' memory that is available the operating system will release and re-organise cache memory, during this phase applications are blocked from accessing memory and you may notice this as slow applications start times or a spinning ball.

If you are in the middle of using an application and the system becomes unresponsive for several seconds it could be the memory manager working and claiming back some of the memory for your application to use, if you wish to avoid this then iFreeMem may be for you.
