"Easy-to-use digital media recovery program"

Overview

RescuePRO is designed to help you recover files that may have been deleted, corrupted, or even formatted over. RescuePRO is compatible with a wide-range of media storages devices which include, but is not limited to Memory sticks, Floppy disks, Digital Cameras and Camcorders, SD, SDHC, XD cards, CD-RW, and most other storage devices.  RescuePRO is however not compatible with Hard Disk Drives it is made to recover data stored on removable storage devices only. LT Technology the developers do offer an application for hard drive data recovery called FileRecovery which provides the same function as RescuePRO only for internal storage devices.

RescuePRO has the ability to search and recover for photos, audio and video, and well as run a recover mode that searches for all lost files. There are also options to backup media devices to an .IMG file which can save you from a corrupted removable storage device. If you’re in need of the opposite side of the spectrum by wiping your removable devices storage clean so that others cannot recover deleted data RescuePRO also offers a “Wipe Media” function that will perform a thorough deletion process on your device.

RescuePRO comes in both a standard edition as well as a deluxe edition. The main difference between the two is range of compatibility for devices and the deluxe edition supports devise up to 128GB opposed to the standard edition that only supports up to 64GB

Installation

RescuePRO currently runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Mac OSx 10.3+. Note that if running with Windows Vista you need to run the application as an administrator. Installation of RescuePRO is standard and doesn’t require any special configurations.

Interface

The interface is a bit blocky and bland. It can look to be more like a free to use application or one that was built in the Windows XP days. The interface is clean and easy to use though with options to “Recover Photos”, “Recover Audio/Video”, “Recover Files”, “Backup Media”, and “Wipe Media” each option will bring you to an easy wizard-like menu that will walk you through the steps to perform the chosen function.

Pros

  • Recovers a large range of removable storage devices
  • Offers a backup option
  • Has the ability to do a thorough wipe of a device that removes data more permanently than a standard format.

Cons

  • Not a very current interface design for a paid application
  • Can run experience crashes and “Not Responding” error messages while trying to access devices which are working properly within the operating systems file system.

Alternatives

When you start looking into applications that offer data recovery you’ll find many applications out there. Data recovery for removable media can be a bit more scarce though. SanDisk offers SanDisk Removable Media Data Recovery which is a free windows application, it offers a smaller compatibility range, but may be a good alternative for recover data off commonly used devises such as thumb drives and SD cards. There is also Data Doctor Recovery Removable Media which also a good recovery application for your removable devices. It may not hold quite the compatibility list that RescuePRO does, but it’s a good alternative. Data Doctor Recovery Removable Media is also free to download.

Conclusion

Even though with my experience with RescuePRO I encountered some issues accessing my removable media I found it to be a good application for someone who works with several different types of removable media. If you’re hosting several different kinds of Digital Camera or HD Video type cards RescuePRO may be your best option. If you’re looking for a simple data recovery tool for your SD Cards and Flash drives laying around the house it may be a good idea to try some of the free software first and see if you have any success with one of those.
