Storage Expo new product launch

LapiStor to launch powerful, user-friendly RAID storage solutions to protect SMEs

August 26, 2004 -- To provide enterprise networks with enhanced RAID data storage protection and business continuity, LapiStor will launch at Storage Expo 2004 the DataPac® 6000 Series of products, one of the most user-friendly RAID solutions on the market.

Supporting up to 9.6 Terabytes of data and using 24x400GB drives to meet the needs of the small-to-medium-sized enterprise market, this new product will take centre-stage on the company's stand (278) at Storage Expo, Olympia, 13-14 October 2004.

"We recognise that many of our customers do not have the time and facilities to devote to installing, monitoring and operating RAID systems on a frequent basis and we have therefore designed this series of products with a heavy emphasis on making it as simple as possible to use. For example, an embedded web-based GUI interface and colour graphic LCD are among its more distinctive features, easing the task of IT staff." Said Tony Howard, managing director of LapiStor.

Featuring a S-ATA II or Fibre Channel 4Gbit interface on the drive side and a Ultra 320 SCSI, Fibre Channel or iSCSI interface on the host side, the 6000 Series is available in 4 drive 1U, 12 drive 2U, 16 drive 3U or a 24 drive 4U versions.

The 6000 Series provides RAID level 0, 1, 3, 5 and 6 protection. Each product in the series provides powerful performance, with the 6300 RAID solution offering RAID 5 sustained reads of over up to 300 megabytes per second (MBps). The custom-designed ASIC supports up to 1GB/second bandwidth or 2GB/s for redundant controller designs.

For ease of installation, operation and maintenance, modular, hot-swappable active components are incorporated to minimise the possibility of downtime. The use of dual host channels further minimises the risks of downtime. In addition, hot swap cooling fan modules guard the product from overheating and hot swap redundant power supply units ensure steady operation of the system.

Each controller supports up to 1GB cache memory. It also features a 64-bit Risc processor with both level one and 256KB of level two internal cache, an Ethernet LAN port and two RS232 ports for out-of-band management.

Within the firmware, safety features include intelligent drive handling, auto cache flush and auto shutdown to protect subsystem data.

"For OEM customers, one of the added attractions of the 6000 Series is that it is available either bearing Lapis's own DataPac brand identity and documentation or it can be adapted to reflect their own specific branding requirements." said Tony Howard, managing director of LapiStor.
