Using a technique called "tarpitting" Sentinare ties up the connection of spammers and binds their resources, costing them precious time and money. Tarpitting works by monitoring traffic and applying sluggish responses to senders showing spam-like behavior. "When our system detects large email attacks, we don't deny the sender but rather talk very slowly to them," stated Chris Paul, co-founder and CTO. "Talking slowly to these spammers invites them into a trap. It slows their operations and can raise the cost of one connection from a few seconds to over ten minutes. Holding the connection of a spammer keeps them from attacking others, helping the whole community."
From the home e-mail user to large corporations, people around the world are fed up with spam. Ferris Research estimates spam cost organizations worldwide over $25 Billion dollars in 2003. "Many people wonder why there has been such a large increase in spam over the last few years," stated Jason Grunstra, co-founder and CIO. "Spamming has gotten so out of control because it costs spammers nearly nothing. Spammers are paid based on the volume of messages they send, by raising their costs we can make their business less effective, and less attractive. We should not expect miraculous overnight results from tarpitting, but if only 5% of mail servers were tarpitting we would see significant results." Grunstra suggests a series of changes such as legal, infrastructure, and system should aim to eventually make spamming not financially viable. "We are devoting substantial resources to not only continuing to block spam but researching methods to eliminate the problem for good."
