Powell Electronics Corporate Headquarters in Philadelphia certified as HUBZone Empowerment Operation

March 17 2004--Powell Electronics, Inc., a national distributor of value-added interconnect products, switches, sensors, and assemblies, and other components and assemblies for the electronics OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) market, has been certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as a HUBZone Small Business Concern through the HUBZone Empowerment Contracting Program.

This designation makes Powell, headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, eligible to receive additional Federal contract opportunities. SBA's HUBZone program, which stands for Historically Underutilized Business Zone, supports the efforts of Congress to promote economic development and employment growth in distressed areas by providing access to more Federal contracting opportunities.

Ernie Schilling, President of Powell Electronics, stated, “We are pleased to receive this important designation from the Small Business Administration. Powell Electronics has been a strong local employer since our founding by Harold Powell in 1946. We’ve been at our current location in Philadelphia since 1961 and we remain committed to helping grow our local economy. Our Philadelphia facility serves not only as our corporate headquarters but as our primary custom-assembly and value added facility, in which our skilled local employees produce electronics sub-assemblies to stringent customer and military specifications.”

The company currently employees more than 100 people at its Philadelphia facility, and more than 180 globally.
