How to Create an Online Press Room Reporters Will Love
New research by Writing911.com reveals 22 possible elements for online press rooms.
LEXINGTON, NC December 1, 2003 - What does a good online press room look like? Writing911.com visited scores of websites, including those of the 25 largest nonprofits in the U.S., in search of the best examples of online press rooms. The research identified 22 possible elements for online press rooms.
Current press releases and an organizational media kit are obvious parts of an online media room, says Kivi Leroux Miller, president of Writing911.com. But our research uncovered lots of additional tools you can offer reporters that will make their lives easier, including image libraries, directories of experts, the text of recent speeches by top managers, and more.
Writing911.com has published the results of the research in a tip sheet called How to Create an Online Press Room that Reporters Will Love, available at www.Writing911.com. The tip sheet includes suggestions that all organizations should follow, such as creating a direct link from your home page with an unmistakeable title like Press Room or Media Center. The tip sheet also describes 22 possible elements for an online press room, grouped into three categories: Must-Haves, Nice Additions, and Special Touches. Examples from more than 20 nonprofit organization websites demonstrate the elements described in the tip sheet.
While the research is based on nonprofit websites, the tips are applicable to all organizations in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors who are interested in meeting the needs of the media.
Building an online press room is an easy way to generate publicity for your organization. Before they call you for the first time, reporters will often check your website. If you impress them with an online press room that delivers the information they are seeking, says Miller, they will be more likely to consider you a reliable source and to call you for interviews.
